Why does Steam allow 'mixed' and 'negative' reviewed games on the front page?

Serious question not being sarcastic. Is there a reason why they put poorly rated games on the front page, or in the sales? I've seen Life is Feudal and Reign of Kings so far this sale. Are they trying to trick players into buying these games??

One person's trash could be another person's treasure. If they were trying to trick anyone, don't you think they would have censored or otherwise obfuscated the negative user reviews?

Well for starters sales are up to the devs not steam so they don't decide anything there.
The second disconnet is that poor reviews != crap game. There are many games that have crap reviews that are perfectly good games for niche crouds. No reason they shouldn't get exposure so that interested parties can find them. You've already noted that you are provided with tools to determine if a game is for you, including the reviews.

I for one don't need other people dictating what is and is not good for me, nor do I only want to buy what is only "popular".

Probably because most of them are big releases.

Also this might just be me, but I feel better getting games from a site that displays big titles like CoD and Civ than from one that only displays indie games. Just displaying indie games just feels a bit shady to me for some reason.

I trust real people for my games. I don't look at critics or any magazines for reviews. If 80-90% of people say a game is bad, then it's bad. There are very, VERY few exceptions, but if I'm buying a game with my money then I'm not going to risk it. You're telling me you haven't let other people's opinions persuade you? I'd have to call you a liar there.

Persuasion is not the same as dictation. I do not let other peoples opinions DICTATE what I will buy. I will certainly consider what they have to say but it does not make the decision for me. Ergo other peoples opinions should not dictate what is shown on the front page.

Also negative review bombing is a thing, bad launch days, I agree take mostly negative off...or even negative...but not mixed...mixed means it's good for some and bad for others...I want to make the choice if I want the gamble or not...

And the negative games? Well at least they find a place in my Crap Games series on youtube I suppose :P

First, sorry for my english.

You can't live in this world thinking that your opinion is the same for everyone, I think you guys call it "elitism" (in my opinion, the term is for a bigger concern than video games opinions, but yeah you get my point).

I've seen a mixed review of Devilian, and I played for 40 hours since I decided to try it, I'm ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ glad I did. Same story for Darksiders 2: Deathinitive Edition. There is not a single good reason why mixed rated games should not be on the front page.

For the very negative rated games, it's another story. They should be manually examined and a decision of either they get eliminated from Steam entirely because of crazy reasons like devs are scamming or obvious things like that, and the rest deserve to be on the front page too.

Steam desperately need to be a curated platform at some point for very precise things.

That really didn't guarantee quality. The first other publisher Valve ever had on Steam was Strategy First.
