Trying to open steam give me the blue screen.

Easiest way to diagnose this is to first run the BSOD troubleshooter tool in Windows itself. Settings -> Update and Security -> Troubleshoot -> BSOD

You can also run a quick sfc /scannow and then a DISM CheckHealth - followed by a RestoreHealth scan if it finds something - in command prompt. These are simple diagnostic tools and can't cause any harm. Google how to both if you don't know how to do these.

I can’t find the BSOD I look just where you said and don’t see anything.

Also if I search for blue screen of death (which I assume BSOD meaned) I can see it but if I try to use it it says it’s not available for my version of windows. But I’m unable to update my PC it says I’m missing important updates but doesn’t show me the thing to download and install them.

I am having the same issue with Windows 11. Keeps going to error report then restarts. Nothing on my end has changed since yesterday so maybe there is an issue elsewhere.

It would help a LOT to know WHICH os you're talking about, and what updates it is running on.

Usually BSODs are result of driver and/or hardware issues. Try updating the drivers. If you run Win11, the drivers maybe still buggy, check the hardware manager in any case and make sure everything is working. Physically check hardware if everything else is fine in the OS, maybe a drive is going bad?

I am on Windows 10 on the most recent update.
The important information is listed on the bottom of the crash.
Your is saying : EX FAT FILE SYSTEM

Short snippet copied about the error from : https://windowsreport.com/exfat-file-system/

The exFAT_file_system is a BSOD error in Windows 10 that usually indicates that something is wrong with the exFAT file system. More often, this type of error appears when trying to upgrade the operating system to a newer version or during the startup of a program.

There are on this website a few "suggestions" on things to do and / or check etc to fix the issue.
But i wanna make sure to say DONT INSTALL ANY CRAPWARE but do feel free to go ahead and read what they have to say and what they are suggesting. Also you can google and search on windows own community thing EX FAT FILE SYSTEM BSOD CRASH
or something like that.

Sorry i couldnt be more of help.
Here's what microsoft says about the error code, summarized:
This bug check is caused by the file system as a last resort when its internal accounting is in an unsupportable state and to continue poses a large risk of data loss.

aka: there is nothing wrong with the filesystem, its working fine, but it encountered a bug.

Usually BSODs are result of driver and/or hardware issues.
This is an old fashioned bias from the time of windows 95 and such.
In modern days, BSODs are rare and mostly caused by software. Most of the time memory management issues or a slight mistake in a config causing memory writes where there shouldn't be any for example.

The file involved with the bugcheck, which caused the BSOD is 'exfat.sys'
one program is loading up this file and using it for something.

exfat is almost not ever the filesystem used on an internal drive.
> No, microsoft clearly states it doesn't involve bad sectors and such. This bugcheck is very specific. The drive should be working fine without any errors on its own and the driver is fine as well.
exfat is the default file system in SDXC cards, it maybe a file system for default on a USB stick or external drive or ssd.

You need to keep exfat file systems well defragmented. exFAT doesn't support multiuser environments, due to its files being easily 'fragmented'. exfat is also suseptable to dataloss, but that said, this won't cause the BSOD.
You may be able to fix these issues just by running defrag and checking the Steam file installation. (reinstall if needed)

Edit: if you care about your USB's or SSD's lifespan, then exFAT could work. It doesn't update stuff daily, therefore less writes, but those 'writes' you're missing is what allows ntfs to fix its files on corruption automatically.
