Steam in-game browser does not work, keeps refreshing pages
Topic. How to fix this? Happens on some pages, for example all reddit pages (which is where many game guides are found).

This is annoying and embarrassing for valve.

Well, here's the thing. The steam browser wasn't built for being an ACTUAL fully fledged browser. It was designed for allowinf certain in game functions to work.

SO you are better off just alt tabbing and using your browser of choice instead.

I have no problems doing that, in most cases, but for example with Hitman 6, the game crashes sometimes when tabbing in/out, making overlay browser a necessity.

Yeah it's not perfect, but it doesn't change anything either.

Older games epecially are not happy with alt tabbing.

I found a workaround for this on Reddit pages. When the page loads click X before it refreshes. If you do it at the right time you can scroll the page and read it and it won't refresh. But if you do it too early you can't scroll the page. So refresh and try again. It is annoying, but it works.

...and if you spam that x too many times steam will partially lock up. My library page went blank and the browser refused to work until i restarted steam. it was working fine for years until a recently. if i alt-tab in kcd for example i get a mouse cursor stuck in my view 1/3rd of the time.

This is a reddit issue, they way have their site built it causes issues on some browsers. It does the same thing on multiple android devices, firefox or chrome.

I can only assume it's part in parcel to force people to use the app instead of the browser on mobile. Just the Steam overlay browser gets identified by reddit a certain way and is subjected to the same crummy behaviors. That's my current crackpot theory anyway.

A fair point as I've wondered the same myself before.

I have a couple of Kindles I typically use for toilet "work". They toddle along nicely, but they will always hiccup when it comes to Reddit, and one bit that does work is always the "would you like to continue on this webpage or use our app" notification popup.

Funny that ;)
