if piracy is a service problem, then steam has a service problem
this is about forced updates !
i agree with you steam, piracy is part service problem.

let me tell you about your service with the example of GTA4. (there are plenty more)

this stupid game gets non stop updates because of that stupid R* launcher, which, i'm pretty sure, was added post purchase btw and i'm 100% sure it was with GTA5. R* would sue you if you would breach a purchasing contract.

read only on the acf file does not work. the only really working solution to me looks like, get the game you want to play ready. zip and backup the folder and when an update gets released, update, delete folder, unzip backup.
with a game like GTA4 getting non stop updates, it will take time and wear out SSDs...

so steam explain to me why i should not pirate any future games? i'm curious.

Steam isn't in control of the R* launcher.
but steam is in control of an option to not update a game. how do you not get that?
Valve doesn't make the Rockstar Launcher, that's Rockstar Games. If you want any potential for version control of games distributed & updated through their launcher, contact Rockstar Games.

see above.
This iis an issue between you and rockstar.
And no the acf method wouldn't work because the downloading and such is handled by the rockstar launcher. Valve only has the files for the launcher more or less.

Though what does this have to do with justifying theft is beyond me.

I mean this is on the level of:

"Well DOminoes can't get the pizza here in less than 5 minutes so I might as well go mug a dominoes delivery driver."

If you're gonna hoist the jolly roger, host it proudly m8, but don;'t come up with such UTTERLY LAME justifications.

Steam really only has the files for the launcher. They don't control or have any say in updates that are funneled through the launcher.

Nobody has to explain anything to you. It's your own choice whether you use a platform that uses forced automatic updating or not. It's known since day 1 how Steam is.

You really should not expect a change in this. Valve is known to be all about "always up-to-date", so they will not change that by themselves. Unless licensing or digital legislation changes, there is absolutely no reason for Valve to change things since the current situation works fine.

You're free to use the services that have the updating options you like, like GOG for example. Much more productive than trying to advocate for a change that won't happen.
Developers are in control of updates, they give them Steam and tell them to give them everyone.

You said the updates are through the R* launcher. Steam literally cannot control that.
reading must be hard.

i downgraded GTA4, i don't even have R* launcher installed. damn

Still a Rockstar matter, not a Valve matter.
Distribution is handled through the Rockstar Games Client, Valve does not make that, so your only option is to ask Rockstar Games.

Buying a license through Steam which has to involve the Rockstar Client means Steam is the 3rd party you used to acquire a license, but the primary party aka Rockstar Games is what you need to play the game itself, it just uses Steam Services to verify you have a license.

i did not, it is not even installed. and don't focus on GTA4 this problem exists with every game
Well, for starters, Steam doesn't explain anything on this forum. They don't respond at all here. It is just a bunch of random non Steam employee users.

Also coming to a board of some of the most tattle tale snitch users you ever saw and admitting to planning naughty edgy things is an extremely bold move. Way braver than I would be.

I had not known GTA4 updated that frequently because of the launcher. That is awful. It is definitely an abject example of the importance of bypassing Steams normal operations at times when you know better.

No, Steam is pushing the updates, as he says. Since Steam is in charge of the version control releasing they could support older versions fairly easily.

You directly mention it getting non-stop updates through the launcher. If you have a way to downgrade it, then you have a way to avoid the updates.

The developer chooses to push the update in the main branch. They can choose not to and put updates in the beta branch or let customers know to switch branches to keep their version.

A lot of games do this.

Steam won't force a developer to do it since a big selling point of Steam is easy updates.
