Valve, "Steam client WebHelper" high CPU usage, high RAM usage in IDLE.
I have no idea what is going on with this process, but only now I noticed that it consumed 2 GB of RAM (no RAM usage limit, or self-cleaning?) and was constantly using the CPU.

No animated effects are running. Hardware acceleration on and off (no difference). All Steam windows are closed (just hanging in the tray.). Not in the game.

Opening Profile page, or Activity, then closing the main window, Friends panel and 1 chat with a friend, all this already takes up 700+ MB, keeping it in memory and constantly keeps rising like in a loop.

I still have the Chrome browser open at the same time with 22 subprocesses, but even it does not use the CPU when idle.
I look at the Task Manager to see "web helper" uses 3-8% (up to 25% in short peaks!) of my CPU when idle on the desktop.

@Valve, what the hell is going on with the version of chromium browser you're using? Could you fix this in next update, please?:boomer:

P.S: I don’t need advice from the community on how to launch Steam with keys without a browser and other nonsense.

Yep, thank you.
I was told that this was fixed in beta, suggesting that you should install and stay on beta. I installed it and returned to the Stable version after that. With fix.

That's...not how it works.
I know. And "it just works".

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Good luck getting through life with astonishing conclusions such as this one. Maybe try dipping your big toe in a vat of ice cream to see if it gets rid of a head ache for your next trick.

switching to beta isnt helping. at least for me and the OP
hello
The most important part was to check the file content and if you see the kind of content inside it like @HornyGoose posted here https://postimg.cc/XXCT2VSG , then exist steam and delete this file and your problems will be solved.

hello

It really depend on how you setup your steam.
Many options are ram intensive but you can have it running around 600mo i guess. Not too bad considering the nomber of features the client have.
And knowing steam it's a wapp ( web app using cef ) , just to let you compare steam using cef with some current browsers just surfing on one same uniq web page ( https://www.ghacks.net/ )

winner is k-meleon and second place goes to steam after 3h of gameplay, some forum activities and screenshots.
Not a so ressource hog imo ...

hello

Glad to see your issue is now solved, happy gaming

I use tiny mode with a launch option so it doesn’t start in large mode. It uses about 280mb. But the moment you enable large mode it will use 600mb, but that is fine as I just want to launch the game with minimal resources as I play on a handheld most of the time.

hello

I guess you're not use the last steam release as the new one , tiny of not it does not unload webhelper process and use nearly the same ram amount as the large one : just a different set of css is loaded by steam and some pictures.

Or you are also using some other -cefxxxx switch and +openxxx
steam\steam.exe -nocrashmonitor -nofriendsui -silent -single_core -cef-single-process -cef-disable-breakpad -cef-disable-gpu-compositing +open steam://open/minigameslist
But even with all theses switch, yes it use 320 mo and not 280mo at launch but as soon as you use anything , game or chat or whatever it goes up quickly as all jobs are now done by1 webhelper so at launch only.

thx everyone, ive tried each advice in this thread and for now the problem is gone.
bidulless Apr 30, 2024 @ 7:30am
hello

Just keep in mind that if you see this kind of thing https://postimg.cc/XXCT2VSG
for the file achievement_progress.json from folder \steam\userdata\<youtusernumber>\config\librarycache even if the file is small, then delete the file while steam is not running.
You can easily verify it content by drag and droping this file to most internet browser like chrome( not tested but should work) , firefox , brave , etc
