Fake "Gift 50$" steam link links to real steamcommunity.com

Hi all,

A friend got a message from another friend about "Gift 50$" with next to it, the *real* steamcommunity.com link, then a bunch of numbers. I know - we know - and I hope everyone knows it's a scam. But this one has me perplexed. What's the point of this one if it leads to the real steam, and since it's a "bad" url, redirects to the frontpage of Steam?

I've been trying to find anything, hoping to see a "smart" IDN homograph attack or something, but nothing. Trying to google it up got me no answer aswell.

edit: just for clarification, when I talk about the link, it's literally just "steamcommunity.com/" and then a bunch of numbers. no "/gift/" or "/profile/" or anything like that. Why bother hacking into a Discord account just to post a real steamcommunity link?

I just got sent another scam link in Discord lol. Saying that it was for a $50 gift card.

It looked allright although instead of "community" it said "communuty"

I was a bit suspicious when I saw the url, but when I entered my fake account, a message from steam saying
“The code to disable or move your steam Authenticator is …” when I saw that I knew it was a scam

Please stop using Discord OP. You will get scammed there. Although there are still scams on steam, Discord has quite a few of them too. This is why i refuse to use it.

wtf I reported this, and the mods didn't delete it, It's clearly linking to a malicious website. this is the core thing moderation should be doing preventing steam users from getting phished. it's the guys only post as well.

Post the link DOESN'T help, as there dummies that goes click on it to test for themselves without understand how things works, then comes whining when they fall for phishing attack.

Making this CLEAR scammers will never stop, the scams ALWAYS going to get REPAINTED over & over, they make up stories from pushing fear, greed, and tricking the gullible.

Gift cards are not sent through chat. They have their own specific notification and it takes you to your inventory, where the Pending Gift can be seen.
