Discord
What is this stupid trend where developers do all the communication on Discord and dont use Steam forums as a place to share information? Discord is a mess and messages get drowned. Why dont developers (not all of course) use Steam to share information?

Example: there is this game, Beneath the mountain. I thought it was abandoned since there has not been any post from the developer for a time. Suddenly an update gets live and we get to know that the developer is only on Discord where he share majority of information about the game.

Use Steam forums. It is good enough.

You’ll have to pose that question to the developers in question. Though, in my opinion, Discord does have a lot of amenities that Steam doesn’t provide. That said, I would like it if developers were more on top of providing the latest updates to their game’s Steam News pages or something. But one can only hope.

Yeah, I see that and partly agree with you. In my opinion they should percieve Discord as a useful (but not necessary) asset and Steam forum as their main hub.

There are many reasons as discord offers a lot more customization making moderation or news much easier then steam forums.

The control they have and the ability for live discussion makes it more useful in many cases.

They also may sell their game in multiple places and steam forums is not something everyone can use as easily as discord.

Honestly steam forums have not been a games main hub for many companies even if they sell on it for many years so you should always branch out if you want to stay up to date on games.

New technology comes around and often replaces older ones as before it used to be the games own forums on their private website or social media sites like facebook where you had to go before and over time something will replace discord too as no one site will or should be the only place to post about game updates.

Discord is more user and Operator friendly to keep the trash out. Much better then Steam forums, with all the BS that people post in the forums.

With Discord the game devs can ensure that hostile users are permanently removed from the space and have far more freedom on what can be posted.
as a customer its just means more run around sourcing info about different games...

some people like the run around...

Not all games are released on Steam, so Discord makes a good neutral ground for devs to get info out to players regardless of where they bought the game.

I would definitely feel a lot more happy about devs being active only on discord, if there was any off-site way to view all those changelogs and bug reports and...

As a developer, the reason is that the players of the game use the Discord much more frequently than they use the forum. And I go to wherever the feedback is.

I do also subscribe to every subforum for my game and read every post in every thread, even if I don't respond to them.

I read the comments and learnt that users are pro-Discord. Not me and I will be more cautious when buying new games and investigate where the developers communicate. I strongly dislike Discord so I have made up my mind. I hope more people share my views.

Actually no, it is NOT good enough for certain people as these forums don't have the same abilities that Discord has.

I personally don't use Discord (in part because I don't have a mobile phone and it makes it difficult to sign up to anything there). But it has good features that are useful to devs.

Such as easily sharing videos in an instant and being able to voice call instantly, or share documents and files easily. As well as having an easier method of having group discussions too.

So yeah, it's their choice and rightly so.

Reasons to use Discord as a Developer.

1: Any negative comment about the game is lost within a minute or less.
2: Any sort of "raid" will not really leave a mark.
3: Don't really need to Moderate it because all of the bad posts goes away so quickly.

What would stop the person from creating a new account on Discord?
Nothing. So they still have that problem.

Are you kidding? Discord is a cesspool with scammers around every corner. And the UI is clunky and confusing for new users.

if you want the developers of a video game to focus more on the steam forum, make the steam forum have more stuff worth paying attention to on it

Well, you can set that only a certain weeks or months old account can join your server.

You can also setup a bot that do a background checking for every new user that joined. It can identify alts as well. :elilaugh:
