Malwarebytes thinks Steam is a Trojan (SOLVED)

Steam started an update of Cyberpunk 2077 today.

The very moment the download started Malwarebytes (v4.6.6) gave me a pop-up,
saying that Steam is a Trojan as you can see here:

I have never seen this before so i thought it was strange.
Anyone else have this happen today?

False positives happen. It's not uncommon. Malwarebytes is just a tool, and if you know for a fact that a bit of software is safe then it might just be a false positive. If you don't know, then stop using it until you get that sorted.

If that's the case then that's very sloppy, because its a very popular game. They're going to scare a lot of customers away with these kind of screw ups.

Unbelievable! Such amateurs. Are they willfully trying to go out of business? These kind of screw ups should not even be happening. We're talking about companies with millions of users. These events have a major impact on their future profits if everyone has this issue.

Well, I have Malwarebytes as well, 4.6.6 and no issues. Is your Steam files un modified? If so, I'd let Malwarebyes look at the logs.

I don't doubt it's a false-positive (i've used Steam for 19 years so i know it's safe lol)
but some people might get scared by this messae.

Flag it/report it to Malewarebytes and move on - it happens from time to time.

Only thing i find weird about this is that it only happens when downloading/updating Cyberpunk.

When testing with other games nothing happens.

Using Kaspersky and downloaded the same Cyberpunk 2077 update. No issues with the AV detecting anything.

False positives are very common for all anti virus software. They have algorithms that try to find new viruses without having them in any database and depending on how strict the rules are, the more false positives are detected,. I had a virus detection in a WordPerfect file I personally created in 1997 on my first pc and had it on a backup CD for all that time and having scanned it several times automatically over the next 20 years, so I was 6000% sure it was a false positive. After the next virus definition update the false positive was gone.

If you want to be extra sure most AVs have an option to send the file as false positive to the vendor and then they manually check it.

the last one I saw was webroot's fudge up - the file in question however is a frequent target of viruses and corruption - used to decompress files on the fly without external interaction (which is kind of silly as all major OS's have a variation of Zip Compression/Decompression)

False positives are more likely to be a thing more than ever with the ever increasing threat of ransomware/malware.

They come and go in phases.

It helps when you actually research it - and flag the file on the dev so they know not to target it for whatever algorithm flagged it.

Better over cautious than not.

I had issues with their software when they changed from Anti-Malware to an Anti-Virus, so I stopped using them. Kept getting parts of their protection shutting off and not being able to be turned on. This was many years ago. Their support couldn't fix it and so I gave up.

Plus I only wanted them for the anti-malware in conjunction with another AV, but that set-up stopped working.

Still have two life time license keys in a drawer somewhere...

Maybe around 8+ years ago. Been a LONG time, especially in the world of IT.

Bought the keys in a box at Fry's Electronics, back when they existed and were a decent place to go.

*counts fingers* yeah that's way back - must have missed that snafu.

Today as far as I know its quite competent. Not ever paid for it - as I already have a paid suite.
But still worthy.
