Interesting website. Thanks for it. It'll take me a little bit of time to discipher what all those numbers mean in order to compare some AV's though.

Honestly im in the same boat. AVG user for years, but now it's getting on my nerves....

Defender has been a decent AV for many years, but AVG just did everything i wanted it to. Might be time to use Defender instead.
https://www.cvedetails.com/vulnerability-list/vendor_id-26/product_id-9767/Microsoft-Windows-Defender.html

It was used as the default protection by our IT at work - it failed several times to detect / prevent malware from emails (some people actually clicked the link... since it looked like a legit supplier)

If Microsoft were able to actually create a decent product for antivirus / antimalware, then they could just fix the OS to not need one.

An AV can only detect what is already on the system, and no av can give 100% security.

And why do have the PCs people use at your work high enough system privileges that a Virus/malware actually can get executed?

Again I said I KNOW this.

You're missing the point. I said that I use a silocone foot for the base of boxes and device that costs less than a penny.

It serves the same purpose but DOES NOT SCRATCH ANYTHING.

Now do you see the point?
Yes: According to that video putting ANYTHING there will break the screen on certain model apple laptops, per the recommendation from apple mentioned in that video. It doesn't matter if it's a silicone foot or something else. They say anything will do it. It's a bad idea. We shouldn't be suggesting that to people at all.

Many programs do this by default. I know because I actually use a firewall, unlike the vast majority of Windows users who default to the Windows firewall and never ever realise what is going on in the background since everything is automated.

True, but I've got no intention of ever using those two cameras so might as well get rid of their functionality by applying nail polish.
Personally I would just go purchase some electric tape and cut a small square which I would apply on top. This way if you ever chance your mind, suddenly need to use your camera once or wish to sell your hardware in the future you can easily get rid of that square and move on.

you could easily just use one of those silicone bandaids and a texta
or some of the gel they use on food products to reseal the bag...
even make a funky origami book marker cover like this...

Nail polish is a lot easier, took one minute and since it's the exact same colour as the rest of the laptop it blends in perfectly.

is your nail polish 100% block out... some paints can be like sunglasses

origami is for people that want to add that something extra to their day...

the joy of paper folding...

I don't want to be mean here, but this whole conversation immediately remind of of the old blonde joke trying to correct a grammatical mistake on her computer...

There are simple commercial grade covers on the market that have adhesive and a weakmagnetic field to keep the cover in place. The difference is they can be open and closed so you do not lose the capability of your cam or microphone when you do need them. They are inexpensive don't require possibly damaging your lenses with cleaning liquids when you potentially sell the hardware. Just search for Magnetic Webcam Cover. We use them on all our business devices they last about 2 years with continued use of the slide.

As for the potential false positive alert. Steam UI is nothing more than a glorified webbrowser with some extra modules. In this case its called CEF.
https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Chromium_Embedded_Framework

The problem is its build on a modified version of Chromium and chromium has some issues from time to time with access privileges firing even though the option is disabled. That does not mean that it ignores your settings its just fires an attempt after a deny which can get registered. Regardless your cam won't simply turn on by even allowing this from your end point protection the option in Steam is still honored its just not very smart with its calls.

If you want to verify the software integrity call your Norton support desk if your license covers consultancy. As for effectiveness of security software the truth is that all have 50/50 general reliability. They either recognize a specific attack pattern, malware signature or they don't. Testing for specific malware recognition is very complex time consuming and still part gamble.

Erm no. I never mentioned Apple laptops did I? Reg50 did.

I clearly said all laptops generally. Of course Apple products are notirously crap for cutting corners. Louis Rossman has some great videos on how structurally and poorly designed they are.

So sure, you can't do it on that but I don't care. I'm talking GENERALLY.

you can set the individual permissions of any app installed on your windows operating system and control whether or not they have access to things like camera, motion sensor, location, ect.

I'm sure there's a guide on exactly how to do so somewhere.

Well, black does black things, such as blocking the two camera lenses on my laptop...
I've noticed several people question, even disapprove, of what you do with YOUR computer webcam, despite your repeated explanations. Gotta wonder why, don't you?
