I've banged on about this many times.
My buying habits have ALWAYS been cheapskate. I play on as many platforms as I can, and I NEVER buy games anywhere near release. I always read reviews after release, and gauge what I value that game at TO ME and wait for it to reach that. Doesn't matter whether it takes years.
And when comapnies like Activision don't reduce I simply don't buy them because they don't offer anything different to anyone else.
2. Ditto. Wouldn't even think about buying a game without reading reviews.
3. Ditto.
4. Ditto. Patience is a virtue.
5. Ditto. There's always another company with a very similar game. Just give it a little time.
I would also add one caveat to the final point.
Regarding people like Activision. If there IS something Iwant as I game on as many platofrms as I can, I don't limit myself.
For example, I wanted COD Black Ops to play zombies with my daighter as she kept begging me. I wasn't going to pay for it on PC as you rightly say, it never gets reduced.
So I simply weent to CEX and bought a copy on PS3 (well two) for £6 a pop.
When you don't put your eggs in one basket, it gives you options :)
Once I finally got here, and saw how there are tens and tens of thousands of games, I became like a kid in a candy store. There was no need to even ask if another game place existed besides Steam. In just over 2.5 years on Steam, I've already collected almost 800 games. I'm already entering my late 50's, so realistically that's more games than I will probably ever have time to play in my lifetime.
But yet I want more games. And I certainly want more options now. At some point earlier this year I heard of GoG, but didn't care at the time. However, I don't like the big update Steam did in August, or where Steam seems headed, so since August I've hardly spent anything on Steam. I'm giving Gog the 99% majority of my money now. And I just heard of another place called Humble Bundle, so I'm investigating what they have to offer too.
So is CEX a name or an abbreviaton? Do they have PC games, or just console games?
Give us all a present and don't...
I love that - and it mirrors so much of how it was for me too.
As for CEX it's a store across Britain (though I've heard they've popped up in other places too - think there's one in New York). It stands for Computer and Msuic Exchange (or something like that, I can't quite remember).
They used to be a record shop mostly but they expanded and grew. Now they're mostly a game shop and second hand electronics goods.
I doubt they'd do PC games or if they do, much, for the obvious reason that keys can only be activated once.
This sale i got a single campaign addon for DCS and that is it. I started it up and saw that i would have to figure out where in the cockpit the damn navigation lights were and could not be arsed to find out. I fly during the day for %99 of the time so cant be arsed. Il do it tomorrow. WHo knows.
Well it IS online too.
I'm disabled and I think I've visited therir brick and mortar stores less than 6 times. But I order online all the time.
I'm not sure they ship outside the UK though. By all means look into it. If they do have stores in places like New York, they MAY ship.
I didn't and I know of many many others who didn't that are older than me.
I've said many times I started out right at the beginning. Built my first computer as a kid (I obviously had help) in the 1970s. Got bitten hard and was lucky in having a close friend who was well off open a computer store. So I had access to LOADS of computers and games as we'd sit in there after hours, drinking and playing.
I'd even come home from work, wait for the parents to go to bed, so I could pinch the main TV and play games like Jet Set Willy on the ZX SPectrum until the sun came up, then grab a couple of hours sleep before work again.
Besides a blip a few years later where I didn't like where Sega games were taking things (beat em ups and so on), but once the PS1 came along I was back in hard, ending up working for magazines.
And nothing's changed to this day. I still buy a few hundred games every year, play continuously.
So no that's not necessarily true at all.
Though I would underline what I always say - be honest with yourself. If you go whole hog into it, you NEED to not stagnate. If you're getting bored or in a rut, go and do something else until you want to come back. Doesn't matter how long it takes. It keeps the hobby fresh.
This has been for years already though.
Only other difference I can imagine is not having actual events anymore where you might win a game or something.
Also, most AAA games seem to be 70euro now, so even with 50% off it still feels expensive compared to Indie games.
