What is it with companies wanting what you do in your spare time in addition to the cost of the game?
When did it become acceptable for companies to charge for a product but then also demand access to the microphone, camera, text input, screenshots, where you are in the world, with whom you are playing and at what time of the day you are doing it all ,as a condition of using their products?

And most people dont even bother reading the EULA hence this is why we are in the position we are in today.

Would you allow some random stranger on the street who asks you for all this info to get it? I seriously doubt it. Yet people are paying for games and giving companies all this info.

It is getting to the point now that games are being made not for entertainment, that is a by-product, but to gather info on you, your family, your friends and who or what you are so they can sell this on the open market or use it themselves for commercial gain.

Then you're not paying attention. Read the Privacy Policy for 'Horizon Dawn' from Sony's website. It clearly says that by installing that game, you give Sony the right to snoop through your harddrive anytime they want to see what music you have, what movies you have, which websites you visit, which other games you play, which programs you regularly use, and a host of other things. One of the big zombie games has the same Privacy Policy. Pretty sure it's 'Days Gone'.
can you elaborate on what you're reading that says this?

Sony's website at playstation.com. The Privacy Policy covers all games on playstations, PC's, and mobile devices. It also covers all Sony businesses going under the following names...
Messaggio originale di Sony:
Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC, Naughty Dog LLC, Sucker Punch Productions LLC, Insomniac Games Inc., Bluepoint Games Inc., Valkyrie Entertainment LLC, Haven Interactive Studios ULC, Repeat Technologies Inc., and all Americas subsidiaries using the brand name PlayStation.

Just some of the Big Brother info they collect includes...
- Your current and recent locations

- Information about how you use the software installed on your device (which may include information about the use of the software offline), such as date and time of use, what games or music you play, what content you browse, share or download, what services you access and for how long, including how often you use chat and other communication applications.

- Information from third-parties as appropriate given our relationship, for example from anti-fraud service providers we might obtain fraud risk scores from law enforcement or partners, we might obtain IP addresses and details of suspected unlawful or malicious activity.

- we reserve the right in our sole discretion to monitor (including through the use of technology that automatically detects images, text, and URLs that breach our Terms of Service) and record your online activity and communication throughout PlayStation Network.

The 2nd entry clearly tells you how much snooping they're doing on you. Listening to Beyonce? They're watching you. Watching a horror movie? They're watching you. Browsing porn on the internet? They're watching you. Illegally downloaded something? They're watching you, AND calling the cops.

The freakiest one is in the 3rd entry, where they "might obtain fraud risk scores from law enforcement". Just like banks have a Credit Score to determine your financial credit worthiness, the police have a Risk Score to determine how dangerous they think you are. So why does Sony need to be calling the cops and asking about you? Why does Sony want that score? Just because you want to play one of their video games?

So they can sell your data to other companies.. it big business to have legal malware these days..
Even windows itself is pretty nasty if you allow all the telemetry to run. WTF does bill gates need all that private info for? It is to spy on you and profile you and to sell you and your ilk to other companies. TO use you.
Let me ask this - so what?

Hey, if you want to give multi-billion dollar tech companies all your private data to built the next gen AI, then that is up to you.

Id prefer if game studios stick to making games as opposed to wanting to know when, where, with whom, at what time, in what timezone, at what time of the day i choose to play their game.

Frankly it is none of their business and i increasingly shun games and companies that have thsi predatory attitude when it comes to data. If thsi means i stop playing games soon then so be it.

A sheep, i am not.

Here's the thing. You have no idea that's happening. You're assuming.

AI does indeed work off human created data, but the leap of faith you're making here is not just that you don't have any evidence of this ACTUALLY happening, but you have no idea where it leads either.

At this point it's not far shy of scaremongering.

Sure, I don't particularly like companies using data, so I just make sure I don't share anything I don't want sharing. There's some easy ways to protect yourself.

Meaningless data.

And that's the crux here, and part of the us vs. them mentality. People will come here complaining about something and expect an echo chamber of support. When that doesn't happen, suddenly everyone who disagrees with their assessment is a corporate shill or sheep and the reason why the "gubment" gets away with ruffling through everyone's underwear drawer. So they demand changes that would force everyone else into their narrow paranoid point of view because they simply can't handle the fact that no one else cares about their manufactured issues.

It is not paranoia, Read the EULA. It tells you what they can take if they want. This, taking of information and the spying on what you do, is obviously ok with you as you seem to be under the impression that this will not happen to you, or that people are paranoid for thinking that what is spelled out in the EULA never will happen.

Work for the industry by chance?
Yeah it's a bit ridiculous. Also 2k making "indie" companies under themselves, then having the same eula like that... I'm sure others do that too

PLease don't be silly by making crass claims like that.

Pointing out you're wrong doesn't mean anyone's therefore on the other side. That's childish logic.
Big surprise that international corporations are involved in legal data fishing, and that the info-war is between American and Chinese technology corporations.

That looks a lot less extreme than what you said earlier. When using playstation system software to stream music, for example, they're going to find out what you stream, because that's how streaming works: you have to ask a server for it. That is not "snoop[ing] through your harddrive anytime they want".

Also, your questions about why sony might want to know whether you're defrauding them is answered by the section you quoted, i.e., they want to know if you're a fraud risk so they can try to avoid you defrauding them.

Or it could be that I simply don't care if Valve or the gubment knows what color my underwear is. It's meaningless data.

But thank you both for continuing to prove my prior point.
