Am I being deceived or is it just my imaginations?
Everyday I look at steam games until the point its on sales, but why do I feel like being deceived ? Like is it just me or does it look like the base prices goes up when its being discounted. For example, a game that cost $50, then it has 20% discount, which should give it a 80% price, but the base price goes up to $60 then with the 20% discount you get $48 which is just $2 off.

I can't help but feel like its happening more often like this, sometimes I question my memory:hffighter:

While I wouldn't say it never happens, it's not as widespread as you think it is.

You can confirm whether this is happening by looking at Steam DB (as long as the item isn't a bundle). It doesn't happen often, but publishers do indeed stealth increase prices at times. Most recent culprit I caught being Nacon and Robocop. They began heavily gouging Japan just days before release -- and that was a price increase while a discount was in effect.

Sometimes games coming out of Early Access go on sale but the price goes up as well. My time at Sandrock did that. There was another one I purchased after EA but I can't remember the game's name.

Most (but not all, Baldur's Gate 3 being an exception) charge less during early access, largely to attract customers as it's a way to fund the development, but I suspect partly because you are beta testing it for them.

Except they increased price after a sale, not during and had stated price would increase before full release from the start. Their next sale was more than month after price increase as Steam requires. Many EA games are sold at cheaper price during their Early Access period and increase to intended full price around the time game is going to exit Early Access.

If it's as prominent as you think, I'm sure you can provide 20 examples. Use this site https://isthereanydeal.com/ to track prices and discounts and then list the games.

I think it's either a memory issue or a simple misunderstanding because price manipulation and rigging is not just against the SteamWorks publication policy but it's pretty much illegal.

There are 3rd party sites that keep track of pricing histories

Nah, what they do, is sell the base game for 40 or 50 bucks, then add DLC that totals to 100 bucks.

Then give a 30% discount for the season pass edition, so the full game is still 70 bucks with discount.
