What MMO has the BEST future? (the game will never die)
I was wondering what MMO currently has the absolute best future in terms of player numbers and general popularity. I want to know because I was thinking what kind of game I could play without playing any other game ever again.

The choices are simple:

- Old School RuneScape (lots of players, has stood the test of time, looking great in this time.)
- Tibia (Old School RuneScape's direct rival. These two games competed for a long time.)
- Guild Wars 2 (might end due to Guild Wars 3 or lack of players in +20 years, I presume.)
- World of Warcraft (popularity and player numbers are dying.)
- Ultima Outlands (great game but complicated and scripty af. few players.)
- EverQuest Project 1999 (great game but few players. 1000 daily players on Green Server. Can recommend this game if you like OSRS or Tibia and looking for something new. It's not difficult to play, just a bit.)
- Albion Online (OSRS competitor, however, OSRS is just better imo.)
- Wurm Online (that game is hardcore, like you have to learn engineering to play the game. xD)
- Ragnarok Online (unofficial servers?)
- MapleStory (Nexon will greed the game into death.)

So these are my top 10 picks for this question... Does anyone know what game of these has the best future, meaning there will still be people playing it in +50 years or longer. A game that will never die? You can also name your favorite MMO out of these.

Been playing the open beta for the First Descendant and it is fun although not sure about it's future yet. Every game eventually dies but War Frame may be a good example of one that has been going strong for quite sometime.

I never understood the appeal of fps mmos. If I want to play an fps I'd rather play either Call of Duty or CS:GO. Those are the best. The best fps mmos are probably Warframe and Destiny 2.

Well one problem with many old mmo games is the age of the population in it. Those still playing there are max leveled max geared and so on, only then playing end game content or pvp. There could also be a "min-max" culture in those old games, as there are only some few character classes and builds that are "valid" to play as.

So for a newcomer it could be difficult to find players to do pre endgame content with, and abit discouraging to experiment with builds on your own when you need to follow some strict schematics to be accepted in the community.

I remember ESO. At the beginning there were alot of fun experimenting with character builds since that was one of the ideas behind it, to copy that character customization like any single playing Elder scrolls game, like Skyrim for example. But in the end the min-max mindset went so far as certain weapons and race perks were a no go at the end game.

I strongly suggest you check out EverQuest Project 1999 and play on the Green Server. It's basically the MMO that WoW copied everything from and P99 is basically the og mmo in a 3D world... I'd say it's the best, I just prefer OSRS because if I play MMO I want to feel relaxed and not press many buttons on my keyboard.

The best MMOs are objectively speaking,

- Old School RuneScape
- Guild Wars 2
- EverQuest Project 1999

World of Warcraft may be up there as well but I don't like it and the player base is slowly diminishing. Ultima Outlands is also very good but it was way too complex for me, if I want complex I'd rather play Wurm Online because that's just hardcore.
None of the above. It's doubtful that any current MMO is going to be around in 50 years. A lot of technology progress will occur over that time making what we have today look like Stone Age tools.

The best thing is to worry less about how long the future is, and enjoy what there is out there today. I have played no less than 40 MMOs to one extent or another and have at least a dozen I pop in and out of on a regular basis.

Do some research and start playing the ones that look the most interesting to you right now. The vast majority are Free to Play, so you have nothing to lose. The others usually have a trial period for you to test the game out. IIRC, WoW let's you play up to level 20 for free.

I feel like the technology around videogames has capped already. As you can see NVIDIA is making their graphic cards big now. I bought myself an RTX 3070 because 4000 series cards burn in flames or melt away like a snowman. In all honesty though, you're right, but I can almost safely say Old School RuneScape will still be around in +50 years. It's just that kind of game.
For me: none of them.

Once you realize that nothing in the game is going to change no matter what you do then I'm out.. pointless to continue. Crapshow.

See... I can take pride in playing games that manage to showcase you just how far you got ahead and how powerful you became over time. Skyrim is a perfect example of this: the "road to Riverwood" (from Helgen) can be lethal when you just start playing.

Then add 20 more hours into the game and if you pass that area you're probably going to wonder why the heck you even had issues.

THAT, to me, is solid gameplay: confronting you with your achievements and allowing you to revel in them.

Not MMO's of course...making me wonder.. why bother? The storyline? I can watch a movie for sold storylines. Because MMO crap (= personal opinion) is only build on one thing: trying to persuade you into continue playing the game and of course pouring money into it as well.

I really don't get it...

Because if enemies level up as you do, you can bet that going for "Legendary weapons" will become a fluke as well, because.. DUH: it only adds up to your overall score and thus, the game and thus enemies will know.

Why even bother with this crap?

For the record? I went here: Elder Scrolls Online (bought it during a huge discount). I quickly noticed the issues and then I began to ignore armor, ignore stats and just did tons of stupid things. Like attacking a dragon (co-op effort) with armor 5 tiers or so below me?

Lo and behold: I survived. Why? Easy: I had purchased an external DLC and you can't have a player deny access to that DLC.

Don't get me wrong here... all the more power to you if you enjoy MMO types of games. But for me it's nothing but a cashgrab and something that doesn't provide any gaming satisfaction at all.

I play plenty of adventure rpgs singleplayer, and not so much mmorpgs these days.

My favourite mmorpg was for a long time Starwars: The old Republic, made by BioWare. For those playing only grind to max lvl mmo games it was quite tedious with all that storytelling and lore. But for those like me it was awesome. BioWare did really combine an adventure game with deep story togheter with typical mmo playing.

At the time there weren't many modern adventure rpg games based on the Starwars theme. Knights of the old Republic 1 & 2 were getting old.

That's the only mmo I've ever returned to after several breaks from it. Good memories.
