It works with Microsoft's OS because usually its designed with the hardware it comes installed on in mind; it has drivers and support for that in the software package that is Windows.
And Windows isn't too hard to use, but no one really uses it. They just run a couple of programs, nothing more.
Browser, Steam, Discord, a text editor, and ... maybe email... and maybe shutdown
like, to the user, email should be part of the text editor or browser
printer as well...
and microsoft knows this
Google knows this.
And they abuse it, unfortunately.. Because knowledge is power, in the sense that, lack of knowledge gives them power and control. They can grand you annoyances. Despite paying for the product, you are still the product. You're an experiment. Your mouse movements, stuff you click on, etc is recorded. Some of it is send to microsoft for telemetry reasons. They claim its to improve their product, but a more effective way is to ask for reviews from some users. Instead they rather test you, like lab rats.
As for google, they realized people don't really care about windows itself and just need to access their netflix and email, so they made a full browser based OS.
So it's not just an Out of the Box, instantly usable, working, well rounded OS for anyone anymore, its a framework for microsoft (or google), rather than a product for the end user.
Linux mint tries to also create an Out of the Box, instantly usable OS. A number of other distros do this as well, but for now they at least don't hide stuff from the end user.
They don't do things behind your back (without your knowledge, by hiding that knowledge obscuring a setting or doing stuff by default you likely don't want.)
... for now at least.
I mean Windows didn't do this either, for a long time...
but then greed came in the playing field, and well...
Anyway, the point is, Linux behaves more like an OS
where microsoft and google behave more like... well, as if you're about to do something bad and they are the police, especially lately since you can't do much without it going through their scanners to check for csam or whatever excuse they have to intrude on your privacy and gather info on you.
It basically behaves like a prison and a set of virusses.
And what you don't know.. you don't care about.
And anything other people say sounds 'extreme', or 'indoctrinated', like... it's too rediculous. 'Naah, there is no way that is happening, they're crazy'
and part of the problem is that they're addicted to the ease of use and familiarity... its hard to break loops and routines, and nostalgia.
but unfortunately...
(a lot of things that do these things have already happened)

(note that, apple decided to abandon this feature luckily)
be careful.

I would believe millions of people are using it and used to dealing with the problems or not complaining but we both know you absolutely can't prove that at all. Dismissing the thousands of threads on everything from here, reddit, social media, Microsoft's own forums, and more as a non-existent minority and treating this guy like he's the only one who this this garbage is garbage is fan-boying at it's worst.
it would be nice to have the simple launcher we had with -nobrowser
i do not see it happening
as far as windows goes
harsh as it may be-too bad
that is what we get when everyone goes all in on the same os
i am as much a part of it as anyone else
there was nothing that worked as well and i was too lazy to take on linux early on
thank goodness there were so many dedicated people involved with it, though
i am now using linux full time
gaming is getting better and better
and there is nothing that i did on win that i cannot do on linux
I switched from Windows 7 to 10 on release day and i switched from Windows 10 to 11 on release day.
Never had a single problem with either.
All my games work ( and i have a few) and after a week i did not even consciously think about the new interface anymore.
All the stuff you possibly dont like you can turn off during installation or after first boot.
I really am scratching my head what some of you expect from Windows 10/11 ?
lol it's not because millions use it, that means is good.. 6 billions got jabbed..
Now about windows, I dont know about you, you were probably a console gaming since your childhood and are probably 15-18 years old now.. that means, your first Computer was probably windows 10 XD. it's why you have no problem with windows 10..
When your first windows was 95, 98, ME, 2000, Xp, Vista and windows 7 and all shared the same navigation system. Easy to use, friendly user and fun to navigate. Since windows 8, it turned so badly, that old windows users have hard time to love windows 10 or 11.. they are just badly designed..
A lots of people dont care about the add in windows 10.. i'll not be surprised to see that those people also own a cell phone, that contains tones of add, and probably doesnt use AdBlock while navigating internet lol. I understand that those people dont understand when we say windows 10 is garbage. Windows 11 is even worse.
By gargabe, i mean, the way the windows has been though to be used.. it's no longer a desktop OS.. as windows was used to be.
Yes you can run games and application.. but the core is still garbage.
Linux is oriented programmer, because just installing a game is a trick you need to know.. while on windows, you double click the .exe and voila. it's the only reason why there is not much people using Linux. still not enough friendly user.
When you like eating peanut butter with organic butter on your toast, then all of a sudden, the compagny change their recipe, and now, the butter taste like ♥♥♥♥.. you have to familiar with this taste, which is no longer the taste you liked before.
New people you didnt tasted the old flavor, doesnt understand why we get mad at the new flavor..
This is the perfect exemple with Microsoft. When you are familiar with a flavor for more than 20 years, then all of a sudden, they change their recipe, you get mad lol.
win 10 / 11 is good.. i like it.. .
win 10 / 11 presents no effect to the programs and games i play...
its the same peanut butter with a new label on the jar...
Chrome isn't the only thing ending windows 7 support, consumer level Windows 7 support is ending lots of places and that's only going to continue. It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of time.
And there's no complaints you can make about how all other OS'es but Windows 7 are garbage that will change that. There's no needle you can thread that will result in windows 7 support carrying in perpetuity or until it's convenient for you.
And this is the consequence for hanging onto an OS long past it's end of support, more and move hoops to jump through. And sometimes there's not magic solutions to get around every inconvenience.
I started with Windows 95. I used every Windows version since.
I have no "nostalgia" for a OS just because i used it for a few years.
Every OS has its good and bad points.
Was Windows 7 a good OS? Definitely. But its also 14 years old at this point and woefully out of date and open to massive security flaws.
I switched from W7 years ago for those reasons and i switched from 10 to 11 for the same reasons.
I just prefer to have the newest, most up to date in functions and security OS.
Which Windows 7 is not in any shape or form at this point.
So this desparate clinging to the past for no good reason is just baffling to me.
Its just an OS, not your first car or some family heirloom.
XD it's not about nostalgia.. it's about using it as a daily routine. as you said, windows 7 was good. I dont understand why Microsoft screwed their windows, other than what we know today.. privacy intruder.. Do you guys, really believe that Microsoft gave away windows 10 for free? XD. nothing is free in this world, unles it come from poor people ,because it come from the heart.
So if windows 10 is free, where do they get their money then? lol.
Even in 2023, i have no security problem with my old windows 7. Maybe i'm not a target for pirate lol. as said before, pirate will seak the numbers, and there is huge numbers of people using windows 10. that means, you have more chance to get hacked if you use a newer version since you'll be the target.
I would have no difficulties to switch to newer version of windows, if this one was a Real Desktop OS. it's not about nostalgia.
