If Steam drop Windows 7 / 8 support, they also drop Linux support. Why? read below!
From Steam Itself:

This change is required as core features in Steam rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome, which no longer functions on older versions of Windows. In addition, future versions of Steam will require Windows feature and security updates only present in Windows 10 and above.

They explicitely says that the future Steam will require Windows 10 features and security update, which Linux can't have. So what Steam will do for that? knowing that there is more Windows 7 users than Linux Users.

If steam can fix their Linux users with Proton, then why not a simple fix for windows 7? lol

Tell me what your windows 10 can do that windows 7 can't!

in 2023, windows 7 is still powerfull and there was no reason for Microsoft to make a windows 10.. why not udating windows 7 for ever? since it was the BEST windows OS.

People dont ask the good questions.. lol. they only want windows 10 and lose their Privacy.

If Steam drop Windows 7 support, they will also drop Linux support and in the future, will drop windows 10 too. This is not a good attitude lol.

Microsoft is doing the same attitude with Dx12, and a LOTS of compagny are now using Vulkan for compatiblity purpose and multiplaform or OS.

So again.. no one can tell me 1 thing windows 10 can do that windows 7 can't in 2023.

Add those line of scripting code to windows 7 and all your windows 10 functionality will work, except you'll be on windows 7 and will keep your freaking privacy.

A lots A LOTS!! Of people will downgrade to windows 7 if compagny that make motherboards start supporting windows 7 again. a LOTS of windows 11 users will also downgrade to 7 if windows 7 get revived.
No one is reviving Windows 7.

So stop forcing people to switch to an extremly bad OS when we actually have a really good one in hand.
No one is forcing anyone to upgrade their OS. However, no one is also obligated to continue supporting those old OS, either. Most everyone has already moved on from Windows 7/8/8.1.

I used multiple times windows 10 and it's a nightmare that never end. from random upgrade to random program that eat all your ressources..the Task manager is a nightmare, filled with a LOTS of program, without talking that windows 7 use around 2-3 Gb of Ram, while windows 10 use nearly 5-6Gb.. Filled with Garbage.
There are ways to deal with most of what everyone seems to dislike about Windows 10. There are tools out there to help.

This is the numerous reason a lots of users dont want windows 10.. without talking about the privacy problem that no one seems to care lol, but they stick on the '' Microsoft doesnt support the security update of windows 7 ''.
Well, they aren't wrong. Microsoft does not support it. If something breaks, if a security flaw is found, no one at Microsoft is going to lift a finger to fix it. Maybe if it's serious enough they might issue a one time fix. I think I remember them doing that once or twice before with XP. For the most part, MS is done with it.

You started this OP off with in the incorrect warning about Linux. Try asking Canonical for help with any of their pre-14.04 LTS releases. Or Fedora devs for anything related to 35 or earlier. They'll just tell you to get on board with everyone else and upgrade to one of the current versions. There is nothing unique here about Windows' lack of support or Valve abandoning an abandoned OS.

Everything continues moving forward. If someone doesn't want to join the rest of the crowd on the train to progress, that's perfectly fine. Everyone else is moving on, though. You'll just have to fend for yourself.

Same trolls will come here to generate nonsense comments just to pick up a fight and copy pasta wall text from another Win7 topic just t annoy you.

Or, we're actually taking these concerns into consideration and taking the time and effort to write thorough responses. Just because someone disagrees doesn't make us "trolls" or "bots" or "AI" or whatever people want to call us.

Old Steam. exe can work with command -no-browser to play games and update them.
Whole point of RED BAR is to force people to upgrade.

There is more to it then just the browser. Parts that you can't turn off, that still use CEF (Chromium Embedded Framework). The no browser command only turned off parts that use a web browser to function.

People talk about the lack of functionality but can't tell me which ones.. as i said, windows 7 is still a powerfull OS. there is no reason for it to not working on windows 7.. we are not talking about windows xp, which was not that powerfull even in the past...

Imagine, if motherboard compagny start making their driver available for windows 7. that would mean, ryzen 9 and RTX 4080 on windows 7. Come tell me after that, that you can do nothing with windows 7 with the power of a ferrari.

The only things that doesnt run on windows 7 is DirectX12 which can be easely replaced by Vulkan.

The issue is software supported by the OS. Not the hardware that Windows 7 can run.

a software can work on any OS then..it's only a matter of lines of code.

Hardware force you to physically upgrade your stuff, while software, optimisation can be made in code to be functionnal on multiplaform.

There is no excuse to spit on windows 7 users as they do right now.. they only want us to take the pills and get windows 10 to enter the train and get our privacy away.. this is what happen when you resist the devil. You become a target.

Linux is not friendly users, + not 100% made for gaming industry, which i hope in the future will become the gaming preference, but until then.. we are stick with micro$oft which hold praticly anyone by the balls.

Yes Firefox will work even in 2026
I can buy games on Steam website via Firefox.exe
But cannot run them as Steam chrome....

Steam looks like, is being controlled by 3rd party = Google.

The Chromium Embedded Framework (CEF) is an open-source software framework for embedding a Chromium web browser within another application. This enables developers to add web browsing functionality to their application, as well as the ability to use HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create the application's user interface (or just portions of it).

CEF runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows. It has many language bindings including C, C++, Go, Java, and Python.

This is from Wikipedia. C,C++ Java and Pythons are all language perfeclty readable in Windows 7.

Nothing on google about the stop functionning Chromium Embedded Framework for windows 7.

it's clearly Steam that will add lines in their core program, that windows 7 will not have the proper .dll to read..

i've hope that someone will find a fix for it. if we can crack DRM games, we'll find a way to make Steam working with a simple fix, since the problem will not come from Google, but from Steam itself.

What will they add to the Core to be that much important and breaking compatiblity.

I want Legal way to use my games i own on Steam Like Steam_Lite.

As i say in many Win7 topics. I give money to Steam and i demand my support as i cannot upgrade, so do other milions of people playing WinXP-Vista-7 era games on Win7.

Lets keep those goal posts in one place, shall we? One argument at a time. You're going way out in left field now.

The point is, you're mis-reading the statement. Valve is dropping support for win 7/8, like they said. That does not mean they are dropping support for linux, which does not have the same issues as earlier windows.

And no, "every jabbed" is not sick.

The reason Steam will block access to windows 7 users, is because of features that microsoft 10 only has.. (which Linux doesnt have). So no i dont understand lol. if Steam work on Linux without the need of microsoft 10 feature, why windows 7 would need it? it's becoming a maze lol.

Or, the feature from windows 10 will also be added to Linux in which case, is not windows 10 only?
It's not a maze. It's very simple. Windows 7 doesn't work with the CEF version that Steam is moving to. Windows 10 does. Linux is not windows, and does not have the same limitations of older Windows versions, and is not what Valve is talking about in their announcement.

whether or not we understand or agree with that limitation is not relevant, it's what is happening.

Upgrading to windows 10 is actually a matter of personnal choice, since choosing an OS you will keep it for at least 10 years.. Can i please choose my OS for the 10 years i'll use it.. If the next OS is dump made, i will not use it and wait for the next one.. The next one is 11 which is worste than 10.. I have no hope that windows 12 will be what old windows was..

A great Desktop experience. Now it's only a maze to navigate on an ugly interface HUD.. everything is white, or gray.. where is the Aero effect that was soo beautifull in 7? Microsoft has Poo on it literally. Windows 10 is not a windows, in term where you have fun to navigate around and fun to use.

Since the first 1 day 1 windows, we had the same interface. 95,98,ME,2000, XP, Vista, 7, all had the same kind of UI to navigate around, so someome from 95 who switched to windows 7, was able to navigate around and remember where things are because it was exactly the same, but better performant.

Windows 8, 10 and 11 are completly different.. it's a bad fusion of Desktop and Tablet. I hate it and can't accept it as my Main OS to use for 10 years +.

It's why it create soo much friction about windows 7 users and windows 10 users. WE ARE FORCED!!! and this is bad.

At this point.. Microsoft should let Windows 7 go and let it Open Source, so anyone could Revive windows 7 for the best of it.

Microsoft will never allow that, because THEY WANT YOU !!!! why they force you to take Free, Windows 10.
Sooh 2/mai./2023 às 16:57
We are able to emulate anything, from Sega Genesis, to Gameboy to PS5 to windows 7 from windows 10.. but Steam will not be able to emulate their CEF? come on lol.

At this point, we could ask: How much steam has received to block windows 7 and 8 users? If Steam need windows 10 ''only'' functionalities, then those functionalities could be emulated.

Solutions are there.. Steam just dont want it.. even if they are worth 7 billions$$$, they will not use 1000$ to make their software multiple OS available.

That explecity means that Steam doesnt care about their customers and i understand.. with all the new customers that come every month, they dont care about losing their customers at all lol.

This is what Business is. Money First then secondly is the money again, and 3rd, you guessed it right, Money again!!!

Sure, they could just stick with an out of date version of Chromium so it will still work on Windows 7.

Let me tell you something about hackers and malware writers though.

They do not rest. They do not sleep. They are constantly testing, looking for weaknesses, and when they find one they do not hesitate to exploit that weakness to the fullest.

It takes an equally tenacious effort to stay on top of security so the hackers can't get a foothold, and when they do get a foothold to ensure that foothold doesn't last long.

Windows 7 and 8 is now an entirely undefended castle, and those of you who insist on continuing to stay there because you've grown used to it are in danger. The barbarians are at the gate, and there's no-one defending the gate.

Yea true. why using CEF is this one is extremly limitating? why not creating their own? since it's only used for the browsing on the market..

They clearly have no respect for their community. i'm with steam since Left 4 Dead 2 i bought at Walmart in 2008 or so.. i was with Vista at this time.

Upgrading to windows 10 is not only a matter of price..but also a matter of personal choice on how badly the OS looks and work. it's not because we are stubborn and want to keep with windows 7 forever.. it's because windows 7 WAS the BEST windows!! Why leaving something working for something bad? Yes windows 10 is working, but it still a bad OS to use, and in 5 years, no one will use it, because when it's bad, you search for something else, and the '' else '' is windows 11.

So people will migrate to windows 11 for 4-6 years and then switching to windows 12..

When you have something good in hand, you stick with it, it's why a lots of people still use windows 7, despite what google could say.. in 2022, we were more than 100 millions to still use windows 7.

No OS is secure that is connected to internet.
Just wait how they start to spread fears about Win10 holes that needs to be patched

Dude, the only way to get Trojen, Virus, Malware.. is if you dont use Adblock, goes on web and dont know what you're doing. Like auto installing anything, you then open your browser and have multiple pop up from everywhere with Taskbar Searchbar everywhere, it's a total mess lol.

I use windows 7 since 2010 and NEVER!! got any problem.sure i got some virus due to illegal downloading and learning which website are dangerous and which one are good and protected.

YOu dont need Windows defenders XD to protect yourself.. you need to know what you do online first.. then buying a good protection software, like Kaspersky in my case.

So security issues is not the problem here. an hacker can only enter your house if you let the door open, unlocked and not at home..
