If Steam drop Windows 7 / 8 support, they also drop Linux support. Why? read below!
From Steam Itself:

This change is required as core features in Steam rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome, which no longer functions on older versions of Windows. In addition, future versions of Steam will require Windows feature and security updates only present in Windows 10 and above.

They explicitely says that the future Steam will require Windows 10 features and security update, which Linux can't have. So what Steam will do for that? knowing that there is more Windows 7 users than Linux Users.

If steam can fix their Linux users with Proton, then why not a simple fix for windows 7? lol

Tell me what your windows 10 can do that windows 7 can't!

in 2023, windows 7 is still powerfull and there was no reason for Microsoft to make a windows 10.. why not udating windows 7 for ever? since it was the BEST windows OS.

People dont ask the good questions.. lol. they only want windows 10 and lose their Privacy.

If Steam drop Windows 7 support, they will also drop Linux support and in the future, will drop windows 10 too. This is not a good attitude lol.

Microsoft is doing the same attitude with Dx12, and a LOTS of compagny are now using Vulkan for compatiblity purpose and multiplaform or OS.

So again.. no one can tell me 1 thing windows 10 can do that windows 7 can't in 2023.

Add those line of scripting code to windows 7 and all your windows 10 functionality will work, except you'll be on windows 7 and will keep your freaking privacy.

why dealing with it? Steam actually act like a jerk.. their attitude is Faar from being a good attitude.. they should work harder to make their software multiplatform. functionning on multiple O.S.

Dude i have a ryzen 5, and can upgrade to Ryzen 7.. and still using windows 7...

Come tell me that windows 7 is not still a powerfull OS. you guys just want to lose your privacy. windows 11 is even worst than 10 for privacy leaking.

Linux is not a freindly user OS... it'S more made for servers side than desktop use.

I dont know what kind of line of code Steam will have to add to make their software functionning on other operating system.. but a lots of Games that doesnt work on windows 7 are not functionning because in the inner code, it scan to detecte if you have windows 10 or not..

Nothing about if the game could run or not.. if the scan detect you have windows 7, the game close. This is a coward attitude.

They are talking about WINDOWS users. Not other operating systems. You missed the first part of their message:

As of January 1 2024, Steam will officially stop supporting the Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 operating systems. After that date, the Steam Client will no longer run on those versions of Windows. In order to continue running Steam and any games or other products purchased through Steam, users will need to update to a more recent version of Windows.

And you also missed the next part, which clarifies further. Here's the first line:

Although support won't end until 2024, we strongly encourage all Windows 7/8/8.1 users to update sooner rather than later.

You do know that the Steam Deck is Linux based, right?

The discussion is about Windows, and specifically Windows 7's lack of functionality to support a Chromium feature that Steam will rely on going forward.

There was zero talk about Linux, which is a modern and up-to-date OS that is fully Steam supported now and in the future.

we stroungly encourage people to get the Jabb..

3 years later, every jabbed are now Sick.

Do you see the problem of forcing people to do something they dont want?

A lots A LOTS!! Of people will downgrade to windows 7 if compagny that make motherboards start supporting windows 7 again. a LOTS of windows 11 users will also downgrade to 7 if windows 7 get revived.

So stop forcing people to switch to an extremly bad OS when we actually have a really good one in hand.

I used multiple times windows 10 and it's a nightmare that never end. from random upgrade to random program that eat all your ressources..the Task manager is a nightmare, filled with a LOTS of program, without talking that windows 7 use around 2-3 Gb of Ram, while windows 10 use nearly 5-6Gb.. Filled with Garbage.

This is the numerous reason a lots of users dont want windows 10.. without talking about the privacy problem that no one seems to care lol, but they stick on the '' Microsoft doesnt support the security update of windows 7 ''.

Lets keep those goal posts in one place, shall we? One argument at a time. You're going way out in left field now.

The point is, you're mis-reading the statement. Valve is dropping support for win 7/8, like they said. That does not mean they are dropping support for linux, which does not have the same issues as earlier windows.

And no, "every jabbed" is not sick.

Woah, when did this suddenly take a hard right turn into anti-vax wackadoo conspiracy theory territory?

And for the record Myself, my family, and about 2/3 of my co-workers got the vaccine. None of us are sick.

Back on topic, if you don't want Windows 10 or 11 due to privacy concerns, you should switch to Linux. It's wonderful, fast, modern, lightweight, and fully Steam supported. Open source means zero spyware or analytics. It's also more secure by it's very design.

Imagine, if motherboard compagny start making their driver available for windows 7. that would mean, ryzen 9 and RTX 4080 on windows 7. Come tell me after that, that you can do nothing with windows 7 with the power of a ferrari.

The only things that doesnt run on windows 7 is DirectX12 which can be easely replaced by Vulkan.

Especially, as I've learned since taking part in these threads - Win7 is actually WORSE for privacy concerns. People are apparently more concerned about privacy in win10 because it's more transparent, plus it provides the means to disable the "spyware" functions which win7 hides and forced on us.

Agreed. Windows 7 and 8 were spying on you too. Windows 10 they just made it more obvious, and they ensured it's a chore to turn it all off. Then in an update lots of things will just turn themselves back on. Most people are happy to trade their privacy for convenience though.

Microsoft isn't the only one. As I wrote this my phone asked me to back up my SMS messages to Google Drive. No, Google, damn it. You know enough about me, you don't need all my text messages too. Next chance I get I'm buying an unlocked Pixel and installing GrapheneOS.

The reason Steam will block access to windows 7 users, is because of features that microsoft 10 only has.. (which Linux doesnt have). So no i dont understand lol. if Steam work on Linux without the need of microsoft 10 feature, why windows 7 would need it? it's becoming a maze lol.

Or, the feature from windows 10 will also be added to Linux in which case, is not windows 10 only?
Rusted Droid May 2, 2023 @ 4:15pm
Old Steam. exe can work with command -no-browser to play games and update them.
Whole point of RED BAR is to force people to upgrade.
