Another angry thread about the planned Windows 7 discontinuation
you better remove the chrome integration than removing steam from windows 7.
so many will lose trust in steam now, even many which are not using windows 7 anymore. but it shows the fragility of the the whole "gaming as a service thing".

there are a ton of threads already but i want it to be one more as a big dislike so i needed to do this post.

What do you need to afford? Win10 is a free upgrade for Win7/8 users, so that's a start without needing to spend money.
And Linux is free- pretty much every distro is free, and many distros will run on a toaster. Dual booting Win 7 and Ubuntu LTS/Ubuntu Game Pack of Pop!_OS only costs a little time to install and set up, and learn some Linux basics (which are nowhere near as hard to learn as some people seem to think they are).

right?

the constant misinformation about it is starting to look deliberate:jawaevil:

Glad you can afford to. Not everyone can, but a $7.7 billion dollar company doesn't care.

This particular company an dso their worth is built upon that framework.

Removing that framework makes everything obsolete they have achieved until today.

Just use Windows 10 and disable telemetry even within a clean install, or any stable Linux. But Windows 7 - as epic as it was as it also had been my favourite OS of all times - needs to "rest".
Just to be fair, I am NOT Win 7. I am Win 8.1.
I remember you N3tRunn3r, and I thank you. YOU are one of the few who actually seems to be trying to help people transition.

I just fear my hardware will not work once I upgrade. Can you GUARANTEE that everything will work when upgrading from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 ?

Well all understand that eventually, we will also need to upgrade our OS to run the Steam client. It's how software works.

And some people CAN'T do that. HARDWARE. Not everyone can just upgrade. Individuals have individual reasons. But the Entity known as valve doesn't care about YOUR wallet, ONLY theirs.

Whatever hardware you have will be able to run Win10.

The only time when Hardware actually mattered in an OS was when Vista was released and when using Aero.

Even Win11 can be installed on old hardware without much of a problem.

This particular company and so their worth is built upon that "CEF" framework.

Removing that framework neutralizes everything they have achieved until today. A reason why Valve "needs" to drop Windows 7 support, an "outdated" and abandoned OS, and to move on "with" their technology they use and have implemented.

Of course they could develop a 2nd Launcher from scratch, but is it worth?

Personally I have ever wished Steam would be coded from scratch as it is a pure performance mess and "drawn together" software, but by this event here which is currently happening, I do now understand why this wont happen... on anytime soon.

Valve even developed an own Linux fork from different Linux distributions, latest is Debian in their SteamOS. Or even talking about their ProtonDB. They could have easily developed an alternative client already if they wanted to.

Just use Win 10/11 and disable telemetry even within a clean install, or any stable Linux. But Windows 7, as epic as it was as it also had been my favourite OS of all times, needs to "rest".

Even hardware from that era becomes obsolete as we talk..

I could setup my Highscreen PC from 1991 which will also work today, you know..

Your welcome. And excuse me. I forgot about your particular OS. But will be same story as sad as it is.

I updated my post on last page.

About what software are you afraid of which wont be working on Windows 10 or 11?

10 and 11 are as same as Vista and 7 had been btw.

Windows 10 is nothing less than a "bridging" OS to transfer customers safely from outdated and obsolete hardware and software into the TPM 2.0 tech via Windows 11. Windows 10 has really low hardware specs so everyone can be "transferred" to nowadays "important" technology. Windows 12 comes next year already as well.. but best time to upgrade hardware will be in year 2025.

Personally I also dislike Windows 10 and 11, if some of you guys have followed my posts, but we dont have a chance and need to adapt.. if we want to continue on Windows.

P.s.:
My last desktop PC I had was an i7-920, 8 GB RAM and with an EVGA GTX 560 Ti equipped which I later upraded into an EVGA GTX 1050 Ti FTW3. Windows 10 had run like a charm on it whenever Windows 10 booted up and even PUBG had run on it without any issues back in time. I had even recorded, cutted and merged FullHD clips with Windows software.

So everything worked fine..

the fact is, it is easy to check

win 10 is not new.

it is nearing its end, itself

you can easily go online and lookup the programs you are running and see what troubles people have had

at his point, all the patches and workarounds, if there are any, will be there

if anything, you may need to check if any of them are nearing their win 7 kill date

I'm concerned with drivers with old hardware trying to work with a modern day operating system. Because we ALL know how much our technology loves being backwardly compatible.

This is already an ongoing issue, Windows 11 has been a fact for quite a while now and it's public knowledge that support for 10 will stop in 2025. Speaking of which... support for Windows 7 ended three years ago already.

So any of this should hardly be a surprise for those who keep up with current development a bit. Like now... you could have seen this coming for more than 3 years ago.

Maybe next time prepare yourself?

A first step and easy solution is to check the Web. Look for particular Win10/11 drivers you need for your hardware, straight from manufacturers website of course. As you would always install Nvidia drivers straight from the Nvidia website.

I guess, your hadware will have all drivers updated for Windows 10 and 11.

Just tell us your machines hardware you are thinking about which might not work.

And if no drivers could be found "manually", Windows 10/11 do their best to find one automatically.

If you run a "fast" and stable Windows 7/8/8.1, Windows 10 will not be a problem at all.

I guess, could you post your machines hardware specs? So we can easily tell you.

Amazing! Thank you!

Your machine is an Intel+Nviaia Setup. All will work like a charm on Windows 10!!

All of your hardware is supported by Windows 10, so you can even use Windows 10 up to year 2030, whenever Steam "might" drop Steam support on that time..

Even your GT 635 is still supported by Nvidia itself for W10/11:

Thank you for confirming. FEAR. I don't want to upgrade into a paperweight.

I could care less which operating system it is. I don't want to click UPGRADE then have a worthless paperweight at the end.

I don't like being FORCED into risking my computer because THEY decided to change things.

My computer works now. Can THEY guarantee it will after....

I suggest you upgrade and await completion after some minutes. It downloads a complete ISO/Install Media in background and upgrades your machine afterwards.

Whenever you upgraded successfully, restart your machine (again) and let Windows 10 search for latest stable drivers.

Then you can backup your important files and do a fresh and clean install of Windows 10.

First do the upgrade, then on anytime later a clean install.

Windows 10 Download/Upgrade[www.microsoft.com]

Windows 10 Specs[www.microsoft.com]

Here is a neat and short tutorial straight from Microsoft for a clean install:
Windows 10/11 Clean Installation Process[www.microsoft.com]

Process is really easy. All you need is an empty 8 GB USB stick. Check that link which I given above. A clear tutorial. Get Windows 11 Media Creation Tool. That link is also on that page.

Once your USB is ready and set with all stuff followed by that tutorial, restart your machine by holding down the SHIFT key to enter the install/recovery menu which is shown at 02:40.
