I fear for Steam's future if GameStop goes under.
Here is why: Steam is now almost completely dependent on GameStop stores to distribute Steam Gift Cards to its customers. Many Targets, Best Buys, etc. in many cities and towns across America have STOPPED carrying Steam Gift Cards, so this pretty much leaves it up to GameStop to carry them. Once GameStop completely goes under (and thus: ALL GameStop stores shut down), then I fear that pretty much all Americans will have no choice but to use their credit cards to add funds to their Steam Wallets. I figure that Steam's been counting on the sheer convenience of Steam Gift Cards to stay afloat; and once that option is gone, then Steam itself might well go under: Steam Gift Cards are FAR more convenient than using credit cards!

The Dollar General has gift cards, and they are everywhere.

Sam's carries them as well, and usually there is a small discount on them so you get even a better deal than other stores.

i get what u are saying but steam gift cards are so expensive in my region that i don't even bother, unless some one buys it for me using you know what. whatever i guess, only the main demographic matters

Well, GOOD NEWS!

How will retail Wallet Codes be affected by this change? For example, will it be possible to redeem USD wallet codes?

MENA - USD and LATAM - USD countries/regions will be able to redeem USD wallet codes after November 20th. In addition, Turkish lira and Argentine Pesos Steam wallet codes will automatically convert to USD based on the daily exchange rate when redeemed on Steam after November 20th.

The only threat for Valve is the CCP-controlled Tencent, which has been buying myriad of independent gaming studios from all around the World since 2018. Tencent also has some 48% of the EpicGames stocks.

So, that Activision&Blizzard acquisition of Microsoft may prove to be an even more crucial deal than it already seems. Because Tencent is already thinking about buying EpicGames, with the help of PRC Government.

So, it is Microsoft which is indirectly helping Valve, in this battleground of Capitalism.

Adults have these things called jobs and these other things called credit cards. Who the hell buys gift cards.
You can get them on sale, so free money, and it allows you to buy things from a region that you don't reside in, apparently.
A silly post frankly.

There's zero evidence they're completely dependent on Gamestop to sell those cards, as Gamestop doesn't exist around the rest of the world to my knowledge. Steam is bigger than the US.

More than that, I seriously doubt cards make up that much of their revenue in any case.

And even more appropriately, there's so many other methods to buy credit without those cards so people will not simply be locked out.

This makes no sense whatsoever.
I am yet to see a credible story on this anywhere in the media and I have Steam clicked as one of my targets for stories/articles.

FYI I see them at Walmart constantly in multiple states. What does this tell me about this topic?

Is GameStop even a thing anymore?

Last time I shopped at GameStop was in 2017 in Florida, and the employee kept badgering me about GameStop card for points that will have no use of me. And in late 2021 and early 2022, I looked at the GameStop store in Florida and I just shook my head and went to a local video game store instead. It felt as if I hit a massive gold mine and bought at least a dozen of retro games. Well worth the money too and beats going to GameStop any day.

They still have to pester you as part of their rules to sign up for this or that.

Most GamStops stopped carrying seriously old retro consoles. Local stores and even pawn shops now have the vast goldmine of stuff GameStop gave up in order to try to stay current enough to be relevant, in their own eyes.

Gamestop IS A pawnshop - its how they buy/sell used equipment.

At a local video game store that isn't GameStop? Not exactly. Heck, that one employee was impressed with the amount of gaming collection I had, both old and new, and even loved racing games like me. They never pestered me to sign up unlike GameStop. If 2024 were to arrive, I'd be more than happy to move to Florida in a heartbeat and shop that same gaming store that outclasses GameStop. IMHO, of course.

It's worse than a pawn shop, with corporate rules.

Most "local" Game shops are vastly superior to Gamestop - franchises tend to...homogenize? things.
