A V2 is coming.
Do you expect Valve to drop the VR market and say "we are done making headsets" after all they have done for the VR community and previous products?
steam should really be looking into those things other wise vr users need a vr gym at about 10 x 10 ft to really enjoy the device.
I highly recommend watching SadlyItsbradley's Youtube channel to get the latest news on all things related to VR.
They did that with the Steam Controller,
And Steam Machines,
And Steam Link (the Hardware one)
So dropping VR Hardware would not really that surprising....
Valve has top competition in the VR market and has been working on VR firmware and all.
Steam machines were a failure and stated by Valve it was. So it makes sense those were dropped.
I'd kind of argue the Steam Deck was the next step though from the Steam Machines and Steam Controller. They still continued to work on Linux support and there own OS despite the failure and merged those two products into one.
Steam Link was advanced into being a Steam Link feature of Steam so it makes sense to drop that too. Probably didn't sell that well. Now anyone can SteamLink with any mobile/tablet/TV/PC device.
Yeahh, Valve has top competitors in the VR market, and so it is more likely to drop that stuff.
If Sony would put PC support out for their VR 2 Headset then Valve (and some others) would really move fast in releasing something better ;)
And it was a failure because Valve thought that people would want play games on a pc on the tv........oh wait....you already could do that....
a) Dropping one product to release a completely different one is not the next step in something (serious....would you use the steamdeck as a game controller when playing on the pc......not that anyone who uses a gamepad would not use the xbox pad either way.....but you know what i mean)
b) Valve never made their own os (even if they call it that), they just use a generic debian and put the Steam Client as Default Fullscreen app at boot into it. (which you can do with the client on every plattform if you want)
The question is did they drop these because they considered them not to be successful or not good loss-leaders.
Me and half the world with not large spare space would certainly appreciate the non-wondering tracking stuff.
Good timing: https://youtu.be/hz1l6An1UDQ ( speculatoin on Deckard )
A lot of disinformation in this post. SteamOS 3 is far from Debian with a default client.
Steam Controller and Steam Machines were good ideas in bad form, Valve learned from its mistakes and created a new product that presents those good a ideas in a form which makes sense. The biggest issues of Steam Machines were:
- low adoption rate of Linux for games
- people with a Steam account already own a PC and love the PC experience
Steam Machines were the wrong way to try to capitalize on console players, specially in a generation when everyone was still attached to physical media.
The Steam Deck gives a new experience, one that even PC players can look forward to and that many people in the PC space craved for remembering the good old days of the GameBoy: bring your games everywhere. Doing so they addressed performances, compatibility and the problem of relying on a user base they currently don’t have. ArchLinux as base distro, Proton for brute forcing games compatibility, custom drivers and a custom hardware to work on to get the most out of their system and a new platform for PC gamers.
VR is not dead, VR could benefit from unthetered experiences and a AR experience similar to what Apple touted with the Vision Pro would create a new way of enjoying games, I’m in for it. Specially if you can always tether and have also a classic VR experience with your PC.
