Yes, because cost of production increases with time too.
Except for digital goods...
Utilities and hardware also fluctuate in price.
No, that doesn't apply here because we're talking about games that were made already. New games costing more is a different story.
So if Activision would raise the price of the older COD titles from 60 to 80 bucks because "well, everything got more expensive and our workers need more money to pay rent" ... that would be just fine and totally understandable?
I dont see solid figures for this discussion, but from what I can see I would say that games actually sell in higher quantities than before. I'm long time player - seems that I have been playing computer games for more than 30 years now. 20 years ago we used to buy few games a year and those game have been played for a long time, over and over. Look around on steam - how many people here have 100's of games? I have 250+ titles in my library - only on steam, and while profile tells that I've been here for 11 years I would assume that easily 200 games have arrived within last few years, maybe three, maybe four. Many of my friends have similar or larger ammount of games. And fun fuct: we dont even play those titles. I always have around 70+ titles never played for a single second, and at least another 50-70 that have been launched for a short while and still waiting to be played more. So, we basically buy games on the first place. Playing is optional ;-).
Games dont see to be much different from many other items we buy in real life. Buying and stacking things is a way of life, right? Same with games. And yes, there are people who own 1-2 games on steam and play them over and over. Full respect if someone asks me, but if we are talking about general situation I would assume that:
- we buy much more games than ever before
- we buy much more games that we are capable of playing.
