My Steam Guard locations are wrong
I've gone through the logs for all my logins to Steam and whereas it used to show me at the exact city I live near, these daysit shows me 150 miles away and has been doing this for some time. One time it even showed me 350 miles away.

Can someone who uses Steam Guard to login (ie, QR code approval), check their locations are accurate?

I even set my phone as a personal hotspot and connected my laptop through it, booted steam, and it had me 117 miles away ...

Location end points are dictated by the ISP/mobile network providers.

Logging in from my mobile will show an endpoint over 250 miles away from a cell tower in an empty field states away.

Using my home wi-fi, everything is perfectly normal.

It doesn't seem to matter which device I use 4G or Fibre, It never seems to hit the nail anymore. Whereas Google knows the exact village I'm in. Apple knows where I am too. Steam used to ... now it's broken every time.

Google is the only one that has my location correctly. Both Apple and Steam set it at different cities, with Steam setting the location closer by than Apple. I know that Steam is correct in the ISP server location, where Apple gets its information from is a riddle to me. :lunar2019grinningpig:

The location you see is the known location of the used IP address, but those are not tied to your own physical location but rather to the location of the infrastructure of whatever ISP you're using.

And that's what you're seeing in your SteamGuard logs.

Apple put the pin in the map exactly outside my front door which is both reassuring and spooky :lunar2019laughingpig:

Are you sure it's a real playtest and not a phishing link? Because playtest invites aren't sent through chat messages.

Wait till what's fixed? Steam Guard locations are not "broken" they are based on your ISP. Mine is always several hundred miles away because that's where my ISP operates out of.

Also, as cSg|mc-Hotsauce asks. Check that the game the invite is for actually has a playtest. You would have needed to apply for it directly from the store page yourself in most cases. If you're getting a random invite through chat or discord, etc., 99% chance it's a scam.
