Verified accounts
I hear that meta's launching and testing a verification method on facebook and instagram. However I don't know the details but it seems to be a bit similar to twitter's verification earlier (which I think wasn't very successful).
They also require the users to submit an ID (matching the name and photo of the user) card.

As valve is making this platform to be more social (->more similar to a social network), don't you think they should also focus on identification / verification, security a bit more in the future?

This might be a complex question but in my opinion it would be positive to try to identify / verify the users (I'm not saying that we have to use real names on the platform. Gamer names are important here). But I do say that the fake users / pretenders / impersonators and other malicious people should be stopped. It would also be easier to detect which accounts belong to the same person. Sadly, a lot of banned people simply come back on new accounts and they don't change / improve their behavior.

No, I don't think they should. "Verified" accounts can still be hijacked and then used even better for scams and such, since they look "trusted".

I also wouldn't want to submit my ID tp companies like Twitter, Facebook or Valve.

Ultimately none of those companies can really verify an account since none of them have access to government systems to actually verify the ID. Sending a faked ID can still easily be done therefore.
Such things might work with celebrities, but not with the average Joe/Jane.

Thank you. To be honest, I can completely understand that. (and I can agree with you.) :(
That's why I mentioned it's quite complex, sadly.

Hijacked verified accounts would be great for scammers for sure, but tbh, I'm so petty that if they offered the steam golden account bundle for a verified account, I would do it without a second thought...
in a good world anything is possible...

but

with the increasing advancements in AI....
your just going to get a lot more really good hackers
making really good life like accounts... more problems for little returns...

but...

i am sure security departments are going to enjoy it all..

Steam "needs" to add a proper age verification system and then adjust their censoring accordingly.

However, what would ID "verification " actually verify? Maybe it's different in the US, but my ID card does not say "Kargor" anywhere on it.

And how would Steam continously verify that the user currently using the account is of age? Of course, within legal boundaries of those countries where such things can actually be done.

Would only end in "adult verified" accounts being sold to minors or to countries where such access is not possible.

I don't care about having to verify my account other than how the private data
will be used etc.

not a foolproof solution but one that doesn't worry me.

they already have my bank details etc

And about that "social" media... let's also not ignore the fact that the whole 'verification' is basically a full sales model of its own. Twitter demonstrated that quite clearly, up to hilarious results.

I want no more "social media" elements here.

Last I knew, Twitter doubled back with the whole paid 'blue tick' thing with a 'grey tick' because as it would turn out, even scammers can pay a buck or two, along with scam. So, as far as I'm concerned, these companies are just trashing the face value of their 'verified' status for funds.

They didn't back out. They are just adding a gold check mark for verified businesses that show it wasn't just a subscription purchase.

What purpose would a verified Steam account serve?

IIRC, they had the 'blue ticks' and the 'grey ticks' at the same time ('grey ticks' being obtained by more merited means IIRC).

It will allow scammers some false credibility and other users a sense of importance. It's bad enough that people are judged on their Steam level let alone some tick.
