is the best social deduction game as of now still the original town of salem? I searched through the social deduction tag and most of the games DOA or abandoned

yeah but its boring and full of weirdos
People tend to cheese, cheat, win asap or just break whatever background logic / lore you've agreed upon.
You need to find the right people and role play to get a good social deduction experience, no matter which game.

The Ship for example is partly one, but bots/npcs can ruin it.
AmongUs similar. if you play with the wrong people, you won't get a debate.

You could try singleplayer games, but those are more like mystery games.

There is a sale ongoing that shows a number of mystery themed games. Personally I like the mystery / detective genre. https://store.steampowered.com/category/mystery_detective
Metagaming has essentially ruined the genre. The only way you can enjoy it as was intended is getting together a group of friends who all agree not to communicate outside the parameters established by the game itself.

yeah, social games should never have a meta because it is peoples different personas that make each game different, why doesn't anyone get this? if you have 12 players who play 10 games together they already roughly know how each will play and it becomes sterile and boring.
Amogus seems like the obvious answer.

I'd recommend TTT on Garry's Mod, but I genuinely don't know if people still play TTT nowadays. :balloon:

most of those are DOA because these types of games require a strong start to maintain flow of players
You asked - I suggested, don't know doa or not.
Some barotrauma servers have this sort of gameplay.

If not give SS13 a try (isnt on steam), there are hidden traitors in most every round, but the deduction usually isn't as direct and can come from some makeshift detective work. Just beware there are some WEIRD servers and a steep learning curve.
I saw this one in a magazine today - coming in March :

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
