Languages in forums
Why do we occasionally get people speaking a language other than English in the forums. If your language is English in settings you should only be able to to to enhlksh speakers shouldn't you?

Whatever you're trying to say here, you don't exactly do yourself a favor.
Steam has a global community and not every language has a subforum.

Edit: I like how your name get censored by the link filter.

Try embracing the community instead of chastising it. It's a global community after all.

And what the hell is enhlksh

There's no rule against not speaking English here, so they're allowed to engage in discussions if they desire just like English-speaking users, whether the latter likes it or not.

Note that you may have a case with languages possessing a dedicated language hub, but then, it's more simple and beneficial to just point it out to them.

I'm not trying to be rude. I just thought if your steam language was English then you would only see English speakers.

It is clearly interpreted as a passive agressive statement against non english speakers. Anyone reading it would think that.

Well that's not how I meant it.

It is rude in my oppinion to write in a different language than english. Especially since this is a worldwide community of people, you can't expect that everybody will understand and speak your language. It boggles my mind that people cry for help on Forums but write in their own language and have to wait hours or even days until somebody else who understands that language comes across.
I think it also makes the work of the moderators more difficulty. They constantly have to use Google Translate to translate posts to see if there was an insult or some other rule breaking thing.

It's even more annoying in games. You have a russian, who writes in his language, nobody understands it, you say "please write in english so we understand you" and he continues to write in russian and than leaves after dropping a couple insults (i had that experience in GTA Online a couple months ago). What's the point?

In this day and age you simple speak english, it's the language that is taught and used everywhere.

The Steam interface is multilingual.

English isn't either taught nor used everywhere. You can fully use steam without a word in English. Just change the language.

And not everybody has the time, ability or chance to learn an additional language.

Then there's the people who mock and belittle those who dare to try communicating in another language.

Disclaimer, typing on mobile. So I'll blame any spelling and grammar mistakes on autocorrect.

Not when you speak multiple languages, like me. Aside from that, most countries are multilingual and thusly multilingual conversations are rather common.

A lot of Eastern Europeans that I've met state that they either did not have English in school or only learned it at a rudimentary level. It's not a person's fault if they don't speak a language.

Says you. There is nothing wrong with talking in another language and if a person makes a forum post in a language other than English, they are aware that they might have to wait a bit, but they also know that they'll be able to understand any incoming reply. If you don't speak a language, you don't have to get riled up, you can simply choose to move on to the next thread.

This is an ignorant statement. Not everyone had a luck to have a decent English language lessons in school or college or whatever, not everyone wants to learn an additional language, and not everyone really needs it. Interesting that in some countries you are not even allowed to speak English.

Steam already does this with reviews, my Steam is in Finnish and sometimes games do not have any reviews at all because no Finnish person reviewed it.
There was an update a week ago:
You can now view all reviews regardless of language by selecting "All Languages" from the language dropdown in the reviews tab of the Community Hub for the game.

Idk why people think English is only language in the world and every body have to read and write and speak it ? reallly ?
1st English is not easy to learn ,
2nd you better educate yourself and learn other language,
3rd Enlgish is not only one or better one .

there are forums where they have rules about certain language to be used, Im not sure the steam discussions do have a mandatory "english only" one though

im scottish but in a way speak the english language, if i was to speak in scottish ye just wouldny uderstand whit i just spoke aboot, no even google translater could work that wun oot. ken what i mean ?

i dont disagree that people should type(speak) in english if its not their native language but english seems to be the mostly used laqnguage on here , so i will leave the scottish speak for offline and if someone feels the need to discuss a topic in a language other than english then fair play to them as far as i know there is no manditory statement to say you need to use english only on here. good luck if steam said only welsh could be used (joke)

not everyone who is in this community can speak english , i dont think they should be judged for that.

ken whit i mean?

I think main forums should be mostly English, but it's true we ARE missing some languages. Maybe a "everything else" forum? Until then, the best thing for these people to do is probably what they are already doing

They don't, and it may be better off that way. : after all, it's easier for an English user to skim past non-English posts than for someone to learn a new language in order to receive basic help.

The "everything else" forums are those very ones that you wish to restrict to English-speaking users.

A better solution would have been to replicate those boards in every notable language, rather than kick out anyone who dares not speak English into a melting pot section. Sadly, there doesn't seem to be any implementation like this in the works.
