Steam and Subscriptions
I came across a rather interesting situation where there is a game that I play on Steam that has a monthly subscription. Now the situation that I have ran in to is the fact that you can buy the subscription ON steam using your Steam wallet. So first I added funds to my steam wallet. and you would think that you would be good to go, but no, after that and to be able to complete the transaction they want you to register a credit card. that's fine, I have one.

But I go to register the credit card, and it appears that steam also wants to turn around and charge the credit card as well instead of just saving the information for later. so until my CC payment goes through I'm stuck waiting, but now I have this money in my steam wallet as well.

It's just really strange that they would do something like this.

Not really. A subscription means continous payment in most cases. Instead of relying on you to have the money in your wallet, they just deduct it from the CC time. Easier and more reliable for them.

The interesting part is where they lead you to believe having it in your Steam wallet would have been sufficient. Not knowing what you saw I'm not sure whether it should have given that impression or not.

When I went to go and make the pruchase I didn't have the amount in my Steam waller, so it basically told me to add funds to my wallet, once that was completed, it then told me to register the credit card.

So I would say that it was very misleading, especially seeing as how the publisher of said game in this case DC Universe Online has a link to buy your subscription through Steam

To buy a Subscription Plan, visit the subscription-based game's page on the Steam Store and select a Plan. Then, add it to your cart. A credit card is required to purchase Subscription Plans.

Yes under normal circumstances that would apply, but because the game is Free to Play but has an optional membership, the membership option for that specific game is not located on the web page. It would be nice if was as an option though.

but it is just the fact that it was misleading in the first place. First add money to your steam wallet. didn't even ask and or mention credit card then after asking for a credit card after you had added money to steam. which as I said, I have no problems with adding, I just have to wait for my payment to clear the bank

Yeah i just realised this. I DEFINATELY have enough in my steam wallet for my sub, but it still took it out of my bank account. not happy as i ha put it into my steam wallet ages ago so i could keep my finances organised. Bit daft, they should take it from your wallet first surely THEN try take it from bank surely :S or give us a setting for it...
