Also its not on their shoulders when ppl used sites with no control whatsoever and yet wants Valve to play the police
Next time perhaps dont gamble skins then
Valve doesnt give a flying hoot if you had money on gambling sites or not. Thats your personal problems not theirs. Remember when its always said that you should use those sites at your own risk?
Them not taking actions so far apparently gave ppl the impressions that Valve is okay with any random joe making new unregulated gambling sites using steamauth
I dont know personally if any site was directly contacted concerning this.
Wondering if the lounge will take a hit
I can see them removing the gambling off the site and just continuing as a trading site. Maybe make a separate site for gambling if they still want to do that. (hell, unless legal action gets taken by someone these sites aren't going to give up that easily)
Let's play a game.... . . . . . MINECRAFT. Oh, you see this nice shiney diamond?! It's worth 10$.
See this Jack of Hearts playing card I found on the side of the street?! This is worth 20cents!
Anything and everything can be used with a value to gamble with, or even sell or trade with.
To say that it's "Illegal" gambling because people created a system of values per piece of virtual cosmetic design is just stupid.
Again, Valve didn't set the Value of the skins, we the community did. We felt a Knife is greater value than an lower tier skin because of the difficulties of getting it (and look factors in as well).
We the community gives Valve, the producers of the items quite a bit of money in return for their cosmetic items.
People need to sit down and really think about this for a moment... WHY are people SO upset that we're 'betting' cosmetic items?
Do not get me wrong now, I understand if I go to a casino that I can buy player chips at the tables in order to play there. But, we're talking about a video game that hundreds of thousands people play, people are getting upset because KIDS are betting on these sites, throwing away their parents money and whatnot.
1: It's the parents fault for not monitoring their children.
2: We cannot Age Restrict anything unless we ask for Personal Information.
3: Personal Information would have to be constantly stored on multiple of sites where I'm sure 80% of them do not have a strong security.
(Major)4: Every site I've been to, has the ToS and disclaimer "You must be 18yrs or older" . . . Okay? That should negate any 17 and under from playing on the sites. It's not the sites or the owners or even Valves fault that we cannot 'ban' or 'block' anybody who is not of age due to personal protection and safety for that persons information.
I believe these sites shouldn't give up easy, Have a strong ToS, explain that anybody found of the age 17 and below will get banned/blocked/ip blocked immediately. Also if the US is gonna throw a hissy fit... TAX the sites, make it a legitimate business. I'm sure 60% of the current sites that CAN, will go for it. As long as they are not taxed out the butts with fees (we all know what I'm talking about...)
There is SO many ways around this, but everybody rather just give up and shut it all down because a very finite amount of people (Mostly parents raging about their kids, whom they didn't monitor.) got into a hissy fit and decided to throw mud at Valve and crap.
Message for the Parents : There is a thing called Site Blockers.... Go F'ing use it and "Protect" your kids like you preach so heavily with all these sad attempt at lawsuits.
77k accounts per month, that's either a security problem at Valve ( possible but not likely ) or very weak security at these gambling sites. Given the apparent ethics with some of them, it wouldn't surprise me if they're on the dark web just selling email/password pairs to hackers.
Maybe not the hijacked accounts necessarily but a lot of the scams lately seemed to involve fake betting sites.
If they were also using the same password for their email account, well that's why now have 15 day waiting periods without an authenticator.
Valve hasn't taken action yet against any of these sites so if a site is telling you that they can't give you your skins back they're full of ♥♥♥♥ and they just stole all of your stuff.
And "funny" as always: everything is swell with Valve until someone takes the issue to court.
The whole problem for Valve was the OpenID stuff. You logged into those sites with you Steam credentials via Steam itself. Anything else should have been a big red flag for everyone.
Listen, if valve doesnt want to take upon the burden of this whole BS, can you really blame them?
Actually what would you do at their place? Telling protestant to suck it up and just sitting? Remember that the cs go lotto is just another case of the good old times so to say when anyone and their grandparents could
make an uunderground casino service.
Do I agree with closing down all sites? Hell no. Do I think there was any viable alternative? Unless one expects Valve to make an exception a list of viable sites (and having ppl raging that x and y site isnt on it)
Also as someone pointed out, US legislations are quite heavy handed with online gambling and Valve being a primarily US based company, they must comply with the US law (but correct me if im wrong)
Pandora's box got opened and no amount of backpedaling would fix the damage that was done.
