Why prices on Steam are so high?
I wanted to buy Fallout New Vegas and what do I see? Steam is charging 20€ for the Ultimate Edition while Instant Gaming is only charging 4.50€

I don't understand why Steam doesn't lower the price, especially since the game can even be purchased for free for Amazon Prime holders but unfortunately this will only be activated on GOG

Steam doesn't set the prices the developer does that's why.

But Instant Gaming, G 2 A and Kinguin must also be authorized by Bethesda to have such low prices! We can even talk about 1€ on the Microsoft Store with the gamepass and access to the whole Fallout series just for 1€.

Instant gaming is a non official key reseller selling grey keys.

Often these keys are either:

Bought from other regions in the world then resold for a profit.
(selling cheap russian keys in the UK or argentinian keys in NA for example)
Valve has recently combated this by raising game prices in poorer regions.

Bought in bulk during a sale from an authorized seller then resold for a profit

Bought using stolen accounts / credit cards / fake paypal accounts

Stolen or generated through other means

These keys can be banned and revoked by Steam or the Publishers.

The fact that you had to alter disguise sone of those should tell you how legit it is. As for Kinguine.. yeah they don't have the best reputation. and that makes me wonder about Instant Gaming.

I had never had a key revoked and yet I often bought from these 3 people

And what about Microsoft who with its gamepass offers for 1€ the rental of any Fallout game just for 1 month? This is a bullet in the foot for steam

You can get Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition with Amazon prime this month, if you don't mind the GOG version.

Yes I downloaded it but I would have liked to buy a Steam version because it will be easier to do modding you know?

Game pass works similarly to Spotify or Netflix, where the more used products get a bigger cut of the rental profits. :) Bethesda games like the Fallout games are often sold for very deep discounts already, so offering them on gamepass or other rental services generates revenue from people that were often not willing to buy the game anyway, or they rent a game and then buy it later. Game pass first 3 months is super cheap, but after the trial period you pay a lot more every month, at which point if all you play is fallout you could've bought the game permanently for the same price.

Key revoking doesn't happen often, but it can happen. This is why these key resellers often include or allow you to purchase a key insurance so you get a new key once your key is banned.

"Gee, why can't Steam sell the product as cheap as this shady online website that only sells keys and does nothing else?".

OP, I guess you think that Steam runs this website on a free GoDaddy account or something? :majinbuu:
Pheex 2022 年 11 月 17 日 上午 6:01
Oh and for finding good deals on official key sellers try https://www.cheapshark.com/

This site shows discounts only from authorized resellers.

What about them? Renting a game is going to be cheaper then owning it, but once your rental is over you don't have the game anymore.

Rentals have existed for years and people still buy games.

If that is the case that developers set the game price how come other sites can sell the games cheaper, do the Devs allow that?

Other sites have sales that go on at different times, dev's don't put their games on sale on every site all at once. Sites like the OP mentioned aren't authorized by the dev's at all, its just individuals selling keys they purchased and games can be stolen.

No, those are unauthorised grey market sellers. When keys are bought with credit card fraud, there isn;t a cost that can be considered a loss.

Developers have even said they much rather people pirate a game than buy it on the second site you mentioned.

You are aware that different business models can coexist, right? Some people are interested in the subscription model and don't mind not having access to the game anymore when the subscription is canceled, other people want to actually purchase the game so that they still can play it down the road. People can use both next to each other even.

It's not a bullet in any way, it's simply a different model that caters to a different subset of gamers.

Different business model. 3rd party keyseller sites often purchase keys from developers/publishers and then sell them or put them in bundles. They simply take a smaller margin or sell at a loss (in case of bundles).
Think of it this way, if such sites wouldn't be cheaper than Steam, what would be the point in using them in the first place? After all, refund policies often are different for them. The lower price *is* the reason to buy there, so they're smaller margin is an "investment" form their side.
