Steam Profanity Filter (talking about this: ♥♥♥♥)

I was wondering if there is a way to diable this, I understand why they have it, but it kinda bug me a bit.
I don't think steam have a option to turn it off, but I knowticed on Discord I was able to extract the actual word in the info from a link my frind posted (you can try it yourself with this topic), so it is possible to disable it yourself some how.

If it wasn't for the fact that rules can and could be changed, we wouldn't have progressed as a society, the internet wouldn't have evolved to the point it has, and freedoms you probably currently enjoy today.

You wouldn't see profanity in the mix. If the filter was optional, people who feel as you do would be free to leave the filter on, and nothing would change for them. This isn't about writers getting to choose whether their words are filtered: all posts would appear filtered, for the readers who want them filtered.

How would making it an option make people believe it's ok to use it? There's always people who's going to use profanity. The option would be off by default of course, and would probably warn you if you turned it off. It's just a client sided thing, not like if you turn it off, it would turn it off for everyone.

Ok, I don't see what this paragraph has to do with what I was saying. Never said making it an option to turn profanity filter off would make moderators stop doing their job...

Making it optional is the same as saying, it's ok.
As it is now, there is no doubt about it is unwanted.

You're simply incorrect. It is quite specifically about that, because of what a filter is. The filters don't change what is written, they change what is read.

I'm not proposing making it optional for a writer's post to be filtered. All posts would be subject to the filter for readers who want them filtered, and all posts would be subject to the rules.

Second, if not being filtered sends the message that the behaviour is okay, I take it you think that all the other rules that don't have filters are all saying "this is okay"? How on earth have Valve managed to get people to not post about piracy without filtering out the word piracy?

Yes, you don't need to tell me this; I was saying it, because it's an argument for my position. The moderators would still be treating things exactly the way they treat them now.

If I were a moderator and the filter was optional I would edit out any profanity manually (and completely) as well as make judicious use of warnings is order to prevent people travelling down the slippery slope.

The filter just means the moderators don't have to do that extra work and allows them to be more lenient on the occasional curse word.

It's used to block more than just inappropriate words. But Matt, why don't ya'll put urls and sites in a different list? Cause it's not worth creating and maintaining two separate lists, one of which a user can opt out of. Plus, once that's done, users will want to opt out of both lists. Anyone is more than welcome to create their own Steam group, with their own forum, and have whatever rules they want. Not here through. Thanks for asking.

It doesn't matter what you're talking about. The filter is still only one single filter that is used for everything. Until Valve decides to create new, different filters for different things, enabling swear words is simply not happening.

Stop comparing online world to the outside world. I thought people realized this point got busted ages ago. You can't code the door, but you can spare 2 hours of your life and make a simple distinction, define into the algorithm what a curse and what a malicious link is.

society defines decency of course not is all cases it is decent to swear, but this dose NOT mean ALL cases are bad, most of the time people use it as a adjective not directed at any one, for example: "♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ look at this big ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ truck" I find hard to see how any one could get offened by that. BUT for what ever reason you do somehow get offened by that you can turn the filter on. and see "holy ♥♥♥♥ look at this big ♥♥♥♥ing truck". but since its on for everyone and there is no option this looks exactly the same and there is no way to figure out if it is different or not

I cannot think of any time on the internet you should be surprised enough to need such an exclamation. With plenty of time to process it should be easy to calm down and then post a less exaggerated response.

Incidentally doing this will tend to deescalate arguments and diffuse tensions.

what you do in real life is your personal business obviously, what you read or what you watch or play.


filters cant make the difference between the context in which swears are being used, as a matter of fact and as Matt said already, making different filters would be much of a hassle with likely not much gaining.

As long as you use Valve service they do, it is their house, so they make the rules, what you do in your own house/website/forum they will not interferre with.

If you visit a friend or familymembers home, you obey their rules too, that is common courtesy.
