What happens to your Steam account if you die ?
You can't sell your account. But can your grieving offspring inherit ?

S.x.

I think it's one of the major assets of my estate.

Your account will wait forever for you to log back.

Not necessarily.

Apparently, Valve won't block such a transfer of ownership as long as the account has been bequeathed to someone through a valid Will.

I have an aquaintance that inherited his uncle's computer and Steam account. Since he did not also inherit the email account that went with it, he has never been able to get the password to log in to the account, but he officially owns it and still plays the old installs of the games in offline mode. Note, it was only a few games and you could replace them all for about $50 now.

If you have digital assets, you can include them in a will. You should also create a document called a digital will, where you include information on how to access your accounts such as email, etc. either through login/password or recovery instructions such as mobile phone password reset in case of your death.

Dead Steam Accounts
What happens to a Steam account if the owner passes away? Can anyone retrieve the account? Will it be deleted after I certain amount of time? What happens to it?

If they've ever purchased anything, nothing. It just remains.
It will just sit there till Lord Gaben pulls the steam cord outa the socket.

I'll use the money to buy me one of those biodegradable pods so I can become a tree.

I could see the classified now: Planning to die soon and selling Steam Account. 750 retro games. Finance my funeral and I'll put you in my will to inherit the account and attached email account and cell phone. Contact soon, as I don't have long to wait.

In F1 heavean (if you qualify) you don't have to worry about it.

Simple answer. Your account stays in the Steam database server for ever and ever unless Valve goes bankrupt in the meantime.

It's given a digital funeral - everyone in your friends list is invited and the games are handed out according to your Steam Appointed Lawyer.
(This is satirical).

Basically if someone dies the ownership of the account can be transfered by will. Though there is an overridding caveat. The person receiving the count in accepting the account also accepts all the terms and sservices with it and so forth.

The reason Steam likely doesn't block it is because really, it's not something they can really stop. passing the account is basically the equivalent of just passing on the username, password, and the username and password of the associated email address, and perhaps the ownership of the phone associated with the account. That's it.

Good question. I actually contacted the support today for a very related question : I lost someone back in february, and I'd like to see her account locked (I'd hate to see this account hacked and used by someone else). Let's see what Steam support answers ...
