Games in general? or just on Steam?
Are pc games so bad now in general, or only those on steam? The quality of games on steam seem so bad now. I remember way back when 9 out of 10 games were worth playing, now it seems 1 out of 500 are decent now.:steambored:

Game quality has declined overall across all devices (consoles and PC).

For various reasons, like global economy being ♥♥♥♥, people playing ♥♥♥♥ free to play games and whatever else you wanna throw in the mix.

It's not just on steam that has decent quality games, other gaming platforms are also facing quality issues as well. Mostly rushed and unfinished, on day one. Most big names only care for money, instead of making games with hard labor and love.

Just like movies before , blame the critics not the producers. Critics these days are asking too much of everything, rather than appericate the hard labor that developers put in to it. Critics are just spoiled like kids, rather then being professional in other words.

Then again developers are playing it safe , rather than taking risk and taking it into the next level.

It's a double edge blade in other words, but mostly from the critics are the blame.

just gonna chime in, if one is seeing "porn" games, it's because you turned on the setting that allows steam to show you "adult content". you can freely turn that setting off.
alternately, you can leave it on and then just click "ignore" on any game you don't want to see and steam will never show that game to you again.
i don't think there's any less "good" games out there today as there were a decade ago, but i agree that there do seem to be a lot more "bad" games out there.
i mean, there have always been ♥♥♥♥♥♥ games. a certain Angry reviewer, who plays retro Video Games, who also happens to be a Nerd can take you back to the past and show you all the ones that sucked ass.
it's likely that there only "seems" to be more now, because the market has expanded to include more games in general.
i still wonder if we are in line for another game crash like in '83 when people lost faith in the market due to how many bad games there were and every dev was just doing a cash grab and mobile gaming is pretty much garbage 99% f2p p2w microtransactions and i see many of those worming their way onto steam. .
but again, you can just click "ignore" and it will never show those to you again.
you can also name 3 specific gamer tags to filter out and steam will never show you any games that have that tag.
if you don't ever want to see a pvp game, put that in the filter and it will never show you any game that has pvp in it. .(i wouldn't recommend that though, because there are many good single player games that have optional multiplayer pvp that are still great without you ever having to engage in multiplayer or pvp)

That's because Steam quality control is a joke. Everyone and their grandmas can sell low effort asset flip trash on Steam by paying $100 fee.

I've seen a AAA game get released that is a pos, The Batman game without Batman.

Far Cry 6 is better off not on Steam.

I'm fairly happy with what I have on Steam, My Time at Sandrock, a fun Early Access game, Nova Drift on GOG another Early Access game. Beat Hazard 2, Stardew Valley, which were Early Access games...

if you sift through the trash, there's enough gems on this site to keep you busy for a lifetime. i don't think i'm ever gonna finish everything in my own library before i die.

Two things generally.

First off digital distribution. This has caused or enhanced the ability for ANYONE to put out games. That's both a good thing and a bad thing. It's exactly the same as in music. By not having large hindrances like getting a major publisher or a partner in paying for materials, collation and shipping, it's levelled the playing field.

So yes, you have an awful lot more games and this goes across all platforms. Not just Steam.

The second thing is better engines and tools to enable people to get into making games. The same applies too. It's both good and bad.

What you can do and indeed should do is learn how to filter your tastes. Otherwise you'll get stuck going through tons of dross you don't have any interest in. Steam tends to pick up on it automatically by tilting things more to what you regularly view and you can filter out things you have zero interest in. Take time to have a nose at filters and the options available.

This can allready happen to one band who made too many records.
The old ones were iconic, you only needed to hear 3 seconds and knew which band it was, 20 years later its just another music when you check in.

And about games, you never get the feeling back that you once had. You change, games change.
You need to find what you like to play, thats a side effect of growing up.
Dont buy what gets promised, dont try to find something back.

I must be the exception, particularly with 8 and 16 bit era (primarily Nintendo) games and Sega Genesis games. Some of them I prefer over the modern ones.

Don't be too strict, though.

There are more games these days in general. More good games, as well as more bad games.

Nothing has really changed much. Go back 30 years and look at the NES. People often fondly remember the good games on the NES, like Super Mario Bros 3, Chip n' Dale Rescue Rangers, Contra, and Castlevania. They often forget that for every good NES game there are several terrible ones. Where's Waldo, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Super Pitfall, Hudson Hawk... I could go on.

We remember the good stuff in our history. The bad stuff often gets forgotten. The result is we look back and see only the good stuff. We're comparing the best of yesterday with the worst of today, and it creates a skewed perspective.

I would not say you're an exception at all.

most people who played games from earlier eras do tend to either prefer them or hold some of them in high regard.

Well, I don't. I have made some attempts with an Amiga emulator, even got a USB joystick from back then (i.e. digital, not analog) -- didn't help. The games used to be good back then, but expectations have changed.
