I'm curious about the wishlist priority from Valve or developers perspective
I know that the order in which the items of the wishlist are placed can be useful for friends wanting to gift you a game. But I wonder what kind of data Valve and the developers extract from this

In fact, I wonder how noisy that data can get, because some people just add and remove games from the wishlist, but don't really care about sorting them.

As a side note, I use that setting to have it easier to sort my own preferences. Because once you have around 100 items in your wishlist, it's easy to completely forget those are there. Sometimes my preferences change, and I send some items to the 999 position, and raise others from the depths to keep my focus on them.

I doubt the devs/publishers see what position their game is on your wishlist, and most probably don't care. There are people with 0 items on their wishlist, and there are people with thousands of games on their wishlist. Who wants to try to track that stuff for millions of accounts? The sorting filters are for users.

More than likely they just get a daily breakdown of how many people added or removed their game from a wishlist, so they can look at a day they published an ad on social media, or had a write-up by games journos, or a day they published a news announcement here on Steam- so they can get an idea of what type of advertising is generating interest in their game, or if something happened that generated a negative response toward their game. We use it to track games we want going on sale, they use it to track PR hits and flops, and advertisement responses. Especially for independent or indie game devs who don't have huge publishers handling their ads and PR, but self-publish or have a small publisher instead..

Well, I was thinking about a collective anonymized data. Like the average position in the list in regards to the total number of items in said list

I don't know, it was a question that simply popped in my head

More likely they only get that it has been wishlisted. Is it not that the wishlist is listed in alphabetized order?

You can shuffle them around ofc hard to know if the person you look to buy something actually has prioritized it that way.

Yeah I doubt they look that much into it as it likely makes no sense.

They likely look at something being wishlisted and that's it.

The simple reaosn being thus - they cannot know if wishlists are being used "properly". In other words, if you're placing games in your order of merit.

I suspect an awful lot of people don't, and probably bung ANYTHING in there. I merely use mine as a reminder - it doesn't mean I want the game. It's just a reminder to look into it for a number of reasons.

So yeah, the problem htere is there's myriad ways to use this, so unless you can know why it's being used a certain way that data would be useless.

Doesn't appear personal ranking is taken into account from a developer standpoint. The rank filter is not really championed by Valve as a meaningful mechanism and is instead for personal use for the user.

I rank games mostly by their release date if anything or if I intend to purchase something sooner because I have time and then something else (which may be better) for later. Rank in this case isn't a reliable indicator.

Your Wishlist Data
Within each app's details page on the Sales & Activation Reports Portal, you'll find a section for "Wishlists". This section tracks additions, purchases, and deletions by users that have your game on their wishlist. Additionally, you can see a breakdown of wishlist numbers by region or country in the "Regional sales report" section for each app. Wishlist data is updated daily for the previous date (ie. as of March 2nd, you can see all of the data up to March 1st).
