Why should i play the Half Life games if the story is incomplete?
I tend to stay away from unfinished things, with very few exceptions if something doesn't end on a cliffhanger or had no story to begin with.

If you think the gameplay looks interesting or you really need more Gmod tools

You don’t play HL for story. It’s a mess that will probably be finished some day and never live up to expectations. Don’t expect Portal quality writing

Half Life 2 especially hasn’t aged well, with the exception of Ravenholm most of the levels are just boring.

Half Life 1 did get the Black Mesa fan remake that uses HL1’s better environment with 2’s more modern additions

Alyx exists for those who spent $500 to demo new technology that won’t actually be consistently used effectively until years later

You play it now so you have to play less later.

Becaus ethe games are fun and rather self contained stories in of themselves.

For the same reason some people suggest you play stuff like Deus Ex. It was a shooter in a class of it's own at the time it came out. Thing is the whole industry pretty much took inspiration from it, and so if you have played almost any modern FPS you already played it anyway.

As for the story it wasn't bad but probably was not the biggest draw of the games. Valve clearly didn't care that much about it. For them the series was kind of a big tech demo. That's why they have not done anything with it until they decided to tech demo what they could do with VR.

Because they're great games.

Play them, then once you've finished Episode 2 you can read "Epistle 3" by Marc Laidlaw to get the rest of the story.

So you can be Gordon Freeman.

Simple - because you need to remember that while it technically is inomcplete each release is self contained like most games, films or books.

Otherwise they simply wouldn't BE releases would they?

The fact is while the story ends on a cliffhanger, there's enough in there to enjoy in their own right despite the cliffhanger.

YOu could equally say a film like "The Italian Job" isn't worth watching because while there was no ACTUAL direct sequel, it does end on a similar cliffhanger. It doesn't change things.

So I'd recommend playing it and enjoying it.

The first game is in itself self contained anyway, along with the two DLCs (which are also well worth gettting). Opposing Force is more shooter based, while Blue Shift is more on the puzzle solving side more like the main game.

Come to the second entry well there's loads worth playing there. The game in itself is worth playing and again, self contained story wise, even though ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. The spiodes then also are worth playing becuae they are more of the same witha couple of small extra things. The story is really only one part of it though.

So don't be put off, try to take the opposing view.

You can still have fun even if the game story makes no sense :)
