Getting notifications when someone replies to me only.
I previously used to get notifications when someone replies to my post in someone elses thread, but now i need to subscribe to the thread and it gives me notification for every single post in the thread, has this feature been removed?

What?
There has never been a way to ever set the notification to only show replies to your messages alone.
That's never been a thing.

You can only subscribe to the discussion.
the notification system on steam absolutely sucks, I get so many notifications when friends comment on things I comment on and I never subscribe to it

That was never a feature. The only option is to subscribe to the whole thread and recieve a notification every time someone posts.

It's an automatic thing to be subscribed to a topic you post in.
You have to manually turn off the Subscribe to Discussion checkbox.

no even when the box is unchecked I get notifications when friends post and the author posts

there needs to be a way to turn it off permanently and there isn't

That's very strange. It literally cannot do that if you uncheck the Subscribe button. Wild.
It does, try it, go comment on a friends screenshot, and you will get notifications if another friend comments or the author does even if the box is unchecked

this gets so annoying if you are active on the activity feed

One will still receive notifications if a friend posts, indeed.

It literally functions the way you claim it does not.

It was never a feature of these forums but it is a feature for all other user generated content. And no, you can not turn it off.

It really should be a choice what notifications you get. For one, you should be able to exclude pinned posts. Some of these are just for technical feedback which most people don't want notifications back on, because it's just random people saying things wrong with a game. And as OP states a filter for replies only. There's a few other choices that could be made too. I don't know with all the other changes to steam this has never happened. Is it that hard to get a system like this to work?

But you don't get notifications about pinned posts unless you subscribe to an entire forum?

Why are you subbed to the entire game hub and not just the threads you want to be a part of?

To be clear this always has been how these forums work.

If you post you automatically by default get subscribed to that thread. Any post at all in repsonse to that same thread will notify you. I've been on these and the prvious forums for about 10 years or so, and they've always worked like that.

Of course, sometimes you can misclick and accidentally the subscribe box when you post and it means that every post you make after that (until you notice your error) you won't subscribe to. That can be a pain in the arse.
