First off, Steam can get corrupted or the download can somehow. In which case, you simply have to clear your download cache. This will mean redownloading all that again though.
However, many users make the mistake of not understanding how Steam handles downloads. They are different here and downlaods are both cnrypted and compressed. This means that when you download you need to aloow up to THREE times the total file size on disc so that it can sort all the data out before writing to its final place.
Also you should never go over 90% usage on your install drive. Steam really doesn;t like that.
So for example, if you have a 1TB drive, 90% usage puts you at 900GB to not go over. If you have say 800GB used, you have 100Gb left to play with. But if you go to download say, an 80GB games, you won';t have enough space as you would need to allow three times that.
And typically when you run over this, it can stop downloading all of a sudden, and not restart, or not start in the first place, or even download to another drive or go extremely slow.
Just bear all those in mind.
