Sociopaths and psychopaths are much better at figuring out what others think they just can't connect emotionally and feel the same excitement or sadness as they do.
You haven't provided any facts about flashsales because we don't have the reasoning behind why they were pulled off of steam when every other site selling digital media has it.
I would suspect because they could earn more money removing it by just using their size as a company as leverage, but that's just speculations.
Unlike you thought I don't present it as fact but a mere speculation.
As for the storefront that's just Steam being slow and terrible at everything they do.
Any other store I go to has some form of algorithm that sorts things into personal preferences.
The fact steam can't even hide games that I own just shows how far behind they are.
Store fronts are there to entice people not make them feel like there is no reason to even walk into theirs like Steam does.
What am I supposed to take from Steams frontstore?
"Hey our sale is Dogsh!t and you own most of the other stuff that ain't dogsh!t please go to our competitors and browse there?"
In the end threads and discussions like these are just time wasting anyway. Actions speak louder than words and it wouldn't surprise me if sales/revenue numbers would indicate that the sale is doing fine. Not that we get confirmation on that, but that in general goes for all stores.
Why dont you sit down and think what i've been criticizing, then reread what you just wrote?
How does putting games that I ALREADY OWN on the sale page, offer me more info on what i can and want to purchase?
Just think for a freakin minute
What tf do these steam fanboys gain from defending steam blindly like this?
I forgot about doing the Q over the holiday, & when I did it just now, I got three cards instead of one. I'm guessing I got the cards I missed, along w/ today's; if so, I appreciate it. ^^
All things considered, I'd say I made out like a bandit.
I know, I just wondered why some games had bigger discount on Autumn Sale than the Winter one. I though the last one had the best discounts.
Flash sales was good in terms of getting people coming back to the store page. With that gone less people have incentives to keep looking at the store page. Steam went cheap with the free cards and other freebie stuffs so there even less incentives to go to the store page everyday.
I've picked up a few indie titles myself, but there has been next to no purchases by anyone on my friends list and that includes someone who only set up their account a couple of months ago.
This is their first 'big' sale and like me, they haven't found much of interest as the discounts are so lacklustre.
I know people say "... well Steam doesn't set the prices" but it seems unlikely that almost all developers en masse decided to significantly reduce the discounts offered during these events at the same time and therefore I have to assume that some common factor had a voice in that decision.
At the end of the day, how Steam chooses to run its sales is ultimately up to them as are the discounts the developers decide to apply during these events...
... that said, I do know that back in the day, my activity feed used to be filled with activity during these sales and I do miss the more vibrant and energetic mood the winter/summer sales used to generate.
If I check the price history through Steamdb for games on my wishlist that doesn't seem to be true.
Disco Elysium - Never had a better price on Steam
Spiritfarer - lowest price on Steam matched
Warhammer 40K Inquisitor - Same price as every sale this year
Interstellar Space: Genesis - Same discount as the past 1,5 year during sales
Hypnospace Outlaw - never had a better price on Steam
Steamworld Quest Hand of Gilgamech - lowest price for the game on Steam matched
Final Fantasy 13, 13-2 and Lightning returns - all 3 same discounted price as every sales moment
Ys Seven - same discounted price as every sales moment
Crying suns - same price as the Halloween and Autumn sale, lowest price for the game on Steam
Loop Hero - same price as the previous sales since October
Warhammer 40K Mechanicus - same price as the Autumn sale, which is the lowest sale price on Steam
The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk - Never had a better price on Steam
Octopath Traveler - Same discount as the past 1,5 year during sales
Hand of Fate 2 - Never had a better price on Steam
Age of Wonders Planetfall - same discount price as every sale since the winter sale 2020
For the King - same price as all sales moments since June
There are more with the same pattern. There are also games like The Banner Saga, Iron Marines, Templar Battleforce and Return of the Obra Dinn which have had better discounts inbetween big events.
So it doesn't seem to be true that "almost all developers en masse decided to significantly reduce the discounts offered during these events at the same time" and it seems rather plausible that different developers/publishers simply have different pricing strategies.
This year however it is simply boring. I miss the sales where there was something fun to do, even if they were lame little jobs.
I know the main thing about a sale is the discounts, but it felt fun doing random stuff with the community.
Wow! What eclectic taste you have. I'm very pleased for you that you can get some good discounts, but most of those games aren't for me. Although, it's a shame about Loop Hero because I got that free the other day on Epic. Also, Disco Elysium is the same price on Epic but you get an extra coupon for money off as well - making it a much bigger discount.
There are other games on there like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Cyberpunk which, with the added coupon are the lowest prices I've ever seen. So if developers can offer good prices on other games launchers then you would think that would translate across all of them?!?
For me, the big seasonal sales used to really feel like a true community event, with Steam itself being as much a part of that community as the players themselves.
Now Steam has become just another storefront selling its wares, trusting that blind brand loyalty will be sufficient enough to blinker its player base to the simple fact that better deals are out there.
I see people (like yourself) citing the 'great' Steam discounts on games like Loop Hero (40% off) when (as I said previously) they could have had it for free on Epic.
Another game I mentioned, Disco Elysium works out significantly cheaper once you deduct the voucher they offer on their site.
These are single player titles so who cares what platform you play it on?
At the end of the day, anyone can paint a picture that suits their own rhetoric if they are going to select only games that they believe illustrate their own point, but even allowing for that, I've easily demonstrated the point I was making using those examples you yourself gave.
Outside of other DRM's, you've got multiple sites offering actual Steam keys at significantly lower prices than Steam is offering during their biggest annual event and going back only a few years, that simply wasn't the case.
The old Steam felt like it was a true advocate of PC gaming.
These last few years, they've felt like just another provider, relying on brand loyalty above actual engagement to drive their bottom line.
