False positive. Steam is not a virus. Pretty standard for Norton to be overly protective.... Eventually it will resolve itself when Norton updates their end.

False positives are pretty common with AVs when it comes to Steam and or games on Steam.

i've been using steam and norton for very long time (norton 20+ years while steam 10+), never had norton to flag steam before

None the less, still pretty common for false positives to arrive out of no where.

Use your best judgement when it comes to an anti virus thinking something is malicious. Generally best not to point blank take their word for it.

Steam has been around for decades, well established, they have some of the best security in the world, you really think because Norton popped up and said it found something is actually going to be true?

Honestly in this day and age, getting a virus is kinda slim assuming you have common sense when browsing online and remain cautious when running random programs...

Add it to the exclusion list

Never assume something is a false positive just from the name of the file.. viruses can spread by infecting existing files, especially executables.

Check the file hash against the hash of the official release if available, or if that is not available or not possible then do a scan with another av to get a second opinion, or upload the suspected file to virustotal and see how many detections it gets.

You have antivirus for a reason, if you just ignore it every time it detects something there would be no point using it in the first place.

I've got Norton360 Premier and its never flagged Steam.exe.
Back when I had SystemMechanicPro about a decade ago it sometimes ate (quarrantined) one of my game's music files... but I think they fixed that.

You can turn on silent mode, it's meant for things like gaming.

I work for Symantec and while we try to update software frequently, sometimes updated files can trigger our system or newer files especially. You can turn on silent mode for programs like Steam or you can manually add files into the system.

Your Norton gets updated right about daily. Assuming something that gets updated daily to keep the exact same behaviour for decades is foolish.

Out of curiosity: do signature updates get tested against common software?

My guess is you are running windows, using facebook and many other data collecting applications/services? Yet you want to bag out one program?

I was just a lowly intern C++ dev there aiding the doc team in Santa Monica(right before they moved). Anyway are they still forcing everyone to use yim for basic communication?

Anyway, fortunately I've never had to turn on silent mode... but if I did would it even remind me to turn it off and check again every once in a while?

lol, we have one hour and up to 24 hours for silent mode, there are no reminders, just time limits haha.
