Starting on March 28th 2022, Steam won't allow discounts over 90% and under 10%

The downtime between each sale was also decreased from 6 to 4 weeks.

Thoughts?

Dang. I should have purchased more games last year.
Not that I play all of them...

Cap at 90%, so no free games offer?
They are basicly 100% discounts. Didnt saw anything about it in the article.

The current discount rules say you can't 100% discount a game either, yet it's done anyway.

It is not possible to discount a product 100%.

Might be it falls under the custom discount, though, which means nothing changes in that regard.

There's a difference between discounting and giving something away for free. The new rules just stop discounts between 91-99%, e.g. XCom 2 which was discounted by 94% recently.

Most of the games you want are typically discounted over 90%?

I have some which I bought at discount some years ago but when I noticed that I have no time to play all I started to buy fewer, at full price or 10% discount when are released.
These news just give the feeling that I loose some opportunity but probably has no real impact upon me.

I don't think you're reading this right. This allows publishers to do more discounts, not fewer.

Don't feel like it will make much difference to me. I find it's always better to make purchasing decisions based on the PRICE rather than the % off anyway.

And this ^^^^

This news is not the Death of Sales like some people seem to have weirdly interpreted it.....

It's not gonna make much of a difference.
This is more Valve trying to level a playing field. and may actually benefit us since it may force dev/poubs to actually cut the base price a little.

Plus, more frequent discounts.

Sounds perfectly reasonable. And do note it's not something really worth worrying about.
90 and 10 are extremes in themselves. If you're after more (or less) then the few percent that this are wiping out aren't any real difference anyway.

So a big nothing burger frankly.

Unless you take into account people pay more attention to the discount percent than the actual price.

I wonder if it'll affect bundles where you get a discount for having part of the content? Sega did that with their Genesis collection and it was done for the 2K Borderlands handsome collection as well...

A few percent make huge difference.
Compare a discount at 90% and 95%. Thats double the price.

Still curious whats the reason behind this.
devs and pubs are probably complaining the 95%off creates loss of sales by not offering the same low discounts across the board and people are not spending.....

so they are grooming the customer once again not to expect anything
better than 90% off in the future so you might buy buy buy now

I'd think that partly its to stop discounts that aren't actually about giving a deal and are more about influencing the algorithms behind Steam's storefront. I have seen some questionable deals over time where the offer is a mere dollar off the full price as a "launch deal" to both show up in the feeds for new product and on sale for maximum visibility.

Then there are the feeder products where they don't care about the base product price. They are fishing for people to actually pick up the DLC. The only sales anymore on the base product are overwhelmingly during stupidly high discounts for hold-outs because it is for only a buck or two. And instead of lowering the base price any they simply keep it at launch price unless its on sale to maximize the discount illusion. And again influencing storefront algorithms to shove their game to the front of the queue by having a very high discount percentage overall.
