It's generally better for threads to just be left as is. Other people can still continue a discussion without you and the thread could be useful for others in the future.
You should realise that especially on places like Help and Tips, posts aren't just there for YOU. They're for everyone, both now and in future.
It's why I often go and overegg the pudding a bit in my responses because I try to account for this.
So yeah, leaving your thread open and not worrying about if the discussion goes round the houses a bit is no biggie as it may help someone.
If you've had enough of the thread, you simply unsubscrive.
If you've done a bunch of the posting but it goes over 7 all is not lost, though you may need some cooperation.
If you delete your own messages and end up with less than 7 then you can delete it.
However you get the number of messages back down is really irrelevant. Everyone else could delete their own posts too and if you go below 7 you can delete.
Not that its happened often, but at least its a glimmer of hope...
