Adding Morrowind to STEAM from an old copy
I noticed Elder Scrolls III Morrowind is on Steam. I bought the DVD and played this on WinXP many years ago and still have the DVD. There's no CD key though that I can see in the packaging to add to STEAM. Is it possible? My copy is "Sold Out Software" "PC Gamer presents" and "Mastertronic" published by what's written on the packaging.

Very unlikely. If you had the CD key, you could try, but most old games don't give you a Steam copy anyway. Publishers have to enable that and many never did/were interested in it.

The retail copy of Morrowind never had a product key as far as i know.

Well upside is if you have a DVD drive you can still play it on DVD.

But just like buying an album on cassette probably didn't get you a CD twenty years later, neither does the disc version of a game get you a digital license from a random store that digitally distributes the game twenty years later.

While I do recall adding a handful of games that I bought on disc to Steam years ago. As mentioned, it's not universal. In fact I don't think you can even add old Half-Life keys from those years anymore. At some point you're just on the hook for a new license.

I have a VHS tape of Gremlins. I demand that Amazon give me a permanent digital copy of that movie because I no longer have a VCR.

I think the publisher of Jagged Alliance 2 offers to give you a steam key when you send them your CD-key (copy-protection key)

GOG also offered (offers?) to add the Stalker games to your library when you send them your "multiplayer-key" which you can find in-game in the multiplayer menu.

But these are rare exceptions, I guess.

Oddly enough, amazon DOES occasionally bundle a digital copy of a movie/music CD as long as you buy the original from Amazon.

I thought that was a neat little promotion.

Thanks for the replies. The main reason was for convenience really as I am running STEAM on Linux MINT on what I refer to as my "middle laptop", 16Gb RAM and an SSD, runs at a pretty reasonable rate however the DVD drive on the laptop will not read many DVDs that are readable on separate computers I have. I suspect it's a Linux issue with the format of the DVDs for some software for copy protection. The DVD is readable on other laptops I have and my desktop so I will probably have a go at that. I know there's an Open Morrowind for Linux which I may investigate.

I got Morrowind years ago when I had time to mess about more. These days I'm married with a 5 year old daughter, working from home and sometimes on two jobs so I get little chance to play except on the laptop in the evening when my wife is watching the French satellite TV that I can't follow!

Worst case scenario, it tends to go on sale for less than five dollars on GOG regularly.

LOL, that includes right now, it's $4.94 for the GOTY edition of Morrowind.

It has been as low as $3.74 on Steam and the Spring Sale may be around the corner, if you want the Steam version of the game.
I have the original too. Reason why i bought it here. Cause it includes everything, patches, fixes, updates. No fuzz for just a few euro.

Not actually unreasonable if you take "you own a license to the content" in good faith.

Not actually unreasonable if you take "you own a license to the content" in good faith.

Except the license also stipulates the medium that you can use to access said content.

You buy a VHS, the license that comes with it is for the content on the VHS tape. If make a copy onto another VHS tape, then the license does not apply to the new VHS. Same if you copy the VHS content to a DVD.

So it is quite unreasonable. The creators of said content sold it in good faith, under the terms of the agreement. Users are the ones who tend to break the agreement far more often then the creator does, though often unknowingly.
