Sharing only age-appropriate games with family
Hi,
Trying to set up family sharing of my game library, but my child is under 18 so don't want them to be able to play 18-rated games I own.
I can see how to use Family View to restrict my OWN account from seeing these games (which is ridiculous, why would I stop myself seeing games I've bought?), but not how to restrict THEM to only seeing age-appropriate games.
I tried setting up Family View in their account, but can't add any of the games I do want them to have.
Has this huge company really implemented child protection in such a ham-fisted manner. Surely I should be able to see ALL my games on my account, but have them only see games I approve?
Or am I totally misunderstanding what to do? The FAQ really doesn't help. Any advice welcome.

To my knowledge family sharing is an all or nothing deal, though I have no idea what might happen if you age-restrict their account, then family share to see what they can or cannot access.

But in general this is all or nothing, see also:

Yeah, that's pretty much how I understood it. I just can't imagine how they thought that was a good solution. Absolutely no thought of child protection or general privacy. Amazing.

Don't enable family view on your account, enable it on their account.
Then family share your games with them, unlock their account to see all games and choose which ones are allowed, then lock it again.
only the approved games should be shown on their account.

You could try Family View on your child's account, which may work on Family Shared games as well. Family View allows you to make a curated "Family Library" and locks all other games (and/or community features, like Store or Forums) behind a pin-code.

Thanks. I was trying to set the restriction on their account, but when you get the list of games to include, only one title was coming up (interestingly, the one title we'd played through Remote Play Together), even though several others in my library are definitely shareable.
Also, the thought of having to go through that rigmarole - including getting a confirmation e-mail sent to their account even though I'm the parental lock email account - every time I wanted to add a title seemed incredibly clunky.

Okay. It seems I couldn't select games to include in Family View on the child account until I'd actually started those games through it. Counter-intuitive. In a logical system, I'd be able to turn on and off access at the game level from the owning account. But whatever, problem solved.:steamhappy:
