I've never seen a paid moderator. Valve employees, yes. They appear on the forum sometimes. But can you show a single post or other sign of a paid moderator?

Yes, people "work for free". It's called volunteer work. People do it for a variety of different reasons.

It's been posted by the moderators. MOST are volunteer, but they have a few paid ones as well

I saw a paid mod a while back - the person had a 'Valve' tag next to their profile name but a moderator badge. There was no other activity or badges on the profile.

They work for free because they think they are special. Same as being a free extra in some crappy hollywood movie or working for free at those golf tournaments. You see, the average person is so utterly mediocre that they must attach themselves to something bigger in order to keep the lie going.
