Steam not working properly on Windows 8.1
Since about last week, every time I try to launch Steam on my Windows 8.1, it will at first tell me that it can't connect, then if I press "Retry", it will stuck at the "Connecting" part forever.

My main PC which is running Windows 7 can however see that my the application on Win 8.1 is connected and ready to stream (but will fail if I try to).

Each day, I will have to delete every file in Steam save for the folder "userdata", steam.exe and the downloaded games, then when I relaunch, it will update, and work again. But every time if I shut down my laptop and turn on the next day, it will fail to connect once again.

I've done the delete files, re-download (update) every day for about a week now but this is getting seriously annoying.

Anyone facing the same issue or has better fix?

Just FYI: I've confirmed that it's not the connection issue, especially since everything else other than Steam are working properly. Plus, it won't be ISP issue since it mainly happen on the laptop running Win 8.1 but not the PC running Win 7, which are both connected to the same network.

Did you ever try reinstalling Steam?
Also no, not facing that issue. I assume that the steam connection management servers nearby your location are okay.
In case you don't feel like deleting and reinstalling Steam,
First, I don't think Steam regrabs every file it needs, but I'm not too sure about that.
cache directories should be temporary. If you haven't already you could try to delete stuff from http cache for example. (not everything, just test)
In case you did, already even try deleting appcache (the root directory of http cache) or depot cache, then uh... yeah,
idk.
Basically it registers somewhere where which files are, and so uh.. its possible your installation is slightly confused now.

You can try running Steam with -nocache option, see if that makes a difference.
or -noverifyfiles

but considering it should work, I recommend trying a clean install. (yeah it would mean you'd need to redownload games and such)

Yes, the whole appcache folder was deleted before, which doesn't seems to help.
The only option left is to try with -nocache option.
Will try it next.

Thanks for the reply!

I have the same problem! The first time I log into steam every day, it will say that it can't connect despite my connection being fine. In order to log into steam, I then click cancel rather than retry. Then I open steam again and for some reason, it always works on the second try. I don't understand why it does this. It's been doing this ever since that last update, I believe. It broke something.

Are you using same account on 2 pc, windows7 did have ssl issue 3 weeks ago, but afaik no win8 was effected, so you should could get that to work, unless you have use same account with both pc. ( do not be login with both on same time, more a test. if this even matter )

Try run as admin, on steam.exe

ps.
and a week ago that dont match anything, so you could have own issue only. or with isp into steam

Thanks everyone for the reply, and really sorry as work got slightly busy last few days so I have't have chance to reply.

The good thing is, during these few days, the issue is not as severe, ie: it got connected when I press try again. I will have to test again tomorrow to see if the issue is actually totally gone.

Yes, and unfortunately I only have 1 account. Somehow for Windows 7 it was more or less no issue so it only affected my Win8.

I tried run as admin, didn't work.
Might be ISP issue, or issue with the laptop itself, not really sure.

Windows 8 was one of those things I skipped - just didn't seem worth it. Does Steam or Microsoft even support it anymore?

It might sound weird but did you try running the steam executable in compatibility mode? For Windows 7 ...

Edited to add - I'm windows 10 - sometimes I have Steam not login and I click on it's icon and choose to exit steam and then start it over and it's fine...

Why would microsoft not support 8 but support 7 in this hypothetical question

Do they support 7?? In my opinion 7 was more stable than 8...

Sorry - I'm not talking support - I'm talking about compatibility mode - I've been known to recommend XP for some games...

Compatibility mode on one exe is not a big risk... And it's easy to change back.
