Steam points and Steam Awards were Valves way of combating against G2A and similar websites
I was just pondering about this while I was getting my treatment done and it somewhat dawned on me that the whole steam points system was most likely introduced as a way of dealing with g2a and similar websites who offer games at a largely discounted price since they also provide trading cards once bought. The Steam Awards add badges, exp and flair which many users love as well as moving profile pics, borders and more.

What do you think of my theory? Do you have any other theories?

The Awards have nothing to do with that site.

Points have nothing to do with that site.

In fact, none of what you think relates actually does.

Then what's your theory?

Points have been around for a few years now, in various and limited forms. Valve knew the reception was great but still had the UI overhaul to finish first.

After the library update, they had time to make this possible.

The point store will slowly replace the usual community market for emoticons and backgrounds to further combat bad actors on them. At the same time they will cash-in hard on people who want to "customise" their profile with some ridiculous prices.

A lot of people have thousands of points and have no idea what to do with them.

Awards were the perfect way to make a fun system that could apply to many areas of the community and had a lot of variety and infinite allocation of points.

Points go back to ye' ole' days of tokens introduced during the lunar 2019 sale.

Valve expanded upon it, during the grand prix event and kept the design to use in future sales.

Points shop got rolled out because people always complained about having way extra points and even had points left from previous sale events. Additionally, profile frames and other animated crap had to be permanent... so the store stayed.

That makes more sense because I was on hiatus during the Lunar 2019 event so I never experienced that. That's kind of wicked

It came as a surprise and had a few implications.

Sadly, I believe minigames like Saliens or other cool sale events may be a thing of the past, and they already are.

A lot of people also looked forward to sale events in the past for free badges but tokens at the time were only obtained though pages (retroactively too).

It's perfectly fine since a sale is about buying stuff but now if you're a collector of free badges, you can only ever rely on the spring cleaning event and award nominations badges.

2021, Saliens returning, and with a proper minigames? It'd be fun. :2018salienpsychic:
