Downloading games with steam keeps killing my internet connection
As title says: when downloading a game in steam it kills my internet connection. I would like to fix this issue.

Downloading from any website with browser or other game clients like origin, epic, blizzard is not an issue and it goes at max speed most of the time. but when I download in steam my internet connection drops after a few (2 or 3) minutes and I HAVE TO RESET MY MODEM AND ROUTER to get the internet connection back up.

I have found several "solutions" but these aren't a fix. I have to set a download limit of 4 MB/s and if that doesn't keep the connection "alive" I have to go even lower, 2 or 3 MB/s. So this is not a fix. Downloading games of 50 GB will take a lot of time this way.

Other "solutions" involve disabling internet sharing on a WiFi connection, but I am using a wired card so I can't find this option.

Other "solutions" I find have you delete steam cache and changing "regions" but this is not a fix. This does not help at all.

What can I do to fix steam download issue?

I am using Win 10 64bit

Hello,

I have a fix,

At the bottom left in the search bar, type: " Show network connections " and click on it.

Then right click on your active network card > Properties > In the list, uncheck " Internet Protocol version 6 " and click on " OK ".

The problem should be solved.

Try adding your PC to the DMZ on your router for a quick test, should rule out any router-specific configurations as being an issue.

If the connection continues to drop it sounds like your ISP isn't playing well with the local CDN for Steam. In that case I'd contact the ISP and explain the issue, they'll probably see the reset connection in the router logs and identify the issue.

Worst case scenario - your ISP is hopeless and you'll need a new router at best or a new ISP at worst.
So I've been having this issue for a while. At one point I fixed it, then un fixed it.
I not only just re-fixed it but I have duplicated the issue several times. Does turning off IPv6 on your network adaptor (Network Connections>right click adaptor>properties>uncheck box for TCP/IPv6>click ok) resolve the issue for you?
I'm having same problem but I can download at 100mb/s in battle net, epic games and other launchers so it's not my ISP, it's only when I download on steam it kills my internet and it's very annoying, been trying to fix it for months

Try changing DNS servers maybe?
If you're just using your automatic dns via your ISP try this instead
(Cloudflare DNS link)
That won't fix the issue; the issue is in transfer. I don't think Valve uses DNS based geolocation for download servers anyway.

If downloads are blowing out your connection, then observe the maximum sustained download speed and set the limit in Steam settings to about 80% of your max.

The problem is that Steam uses multiple threads to download games, and this can give the client an unfair advantage when it comes to the distribution of bandwidth to Internet connected applications.

I can download at around 100 mb/s max and even if I limit to 10% (10 mb/s) it will still shut down internet after 2-3 minutes of downloading,

i can't access internet on any device in my whole house, it's exactly like OP describe issue is ONLY with steam, i think there is no fix that exists i've searched for hours

I suggest you go back and read what I've explained already.

Steam does not work like other download platforms, so it's quite common to make the flawed assumption that it must be steam at fault.

Steam downloads games encrypted AND compressed. Because of this, it means that your internet capabilities are NOT the limiting factor (whereas on other services it might be). It's commonly your CPU and hard drive speed.

Usually the limiting factor is the storage media and/or CPU if they fall behind unpacking content. This is especially noticeable during updates where a relatively small patch affects files that are gigabytes in size.

Ah but the fact is it depends from game to game, which is why I don't specifiy to avoid confusion. Some games do all this during the download, others do it at the end.
if the router/modem/isp cant keep up, limit steam download speed
steam -> settings -> downloads

tick limit bandwidth to about half of your speedtest.net speed
*note kbps vs kBps, its about 10b = 1 B when data is transferred

Ok but it doesn't make much sense, my CPU and hard drive are limiting factors on steam when I limit bandwith to 10 mb/s but not when when I Download at 100mb/s on b.net ? Ok then
Don't you have to download then install on battle dot net? Steam installs while it is downloading.

much rather have the download finish, then install, instead of seeing steam download, install, along with some preallocation nonsense all at the same time and take 10x longer.
