do you remember the old steam ?

and now steam turned into an RPG tool itself. Our inventory is filled with trash we cant get rid of. People care more about their steam level & xp status than their lvl in cs:go or TF2 and it went so far, that steam level booster exists so people throw their money into it to get worthless lvlup on steam.

People have to buy a game or add funds to use simple features like adding friends.

I miss the old steam

Steam is a game client foremost. Besides that, who really cares what other people do regarding steam level, xp, what ever.
I don't care about level. I only craft the Sale badges and don't trade that much. But card sale cents come handy to buy me some cheap skins in DOTA.

Take the positives, ignore the negatives.

Tito's not wrong though, Steam community is just a forum crossed with facebook, but for GAAAMERZZZZZZ.

true, i still play cs1.6, cz and source. Much better than csgo
i still play the gold src classics. i grew up with them they are hard to let them go.

csgo isnt as bad as you say, but the classics are the best especially 1.5 and 1.6. i didn't mind the retail 1.0 and the beta of cs i think it was 6.5 when m4a1 had a scope, no silencer. and of course the old es maps like trinity. few old de maps like vegas, foption, and i did miss some of the cs maps like thunder. nostalgia!

the old steam client i grew up with from 2003-2004 is my favourite ui i did like the old green-grey ui the mini icq/msn chat system and codename gorden.

exactly, my words! i dont need most of nowadays steam features. The classic steam had just a marketplace, friends, simple profile. Enough to go. I dont need any achievements that dont bring me any advantages ingame. I dont need any steam level nor an inventory system. I sell all my items not because i love to use the feature or i need money to buy a game but because its all things i dont need. The worst are the items that cant be traded or sold so they stay in the inventory. Heck, during old classic steam times, we didnt even had skins, cases, keys and a marketplace for them nor did we had games with those skins feature and it was wayy better, if i play csgo i have to look at all the ugly skins instead of the standard realistic skins.

btw i grew up with the gold src games too and hell that was a great time. I dont buy new games because nowadays games dont give me the kick. Its all about DLCs, skins, P2W, unlocks and ranking today

So what? Last time I checked, Steam didn't charge for inventory space.

Ah, there's the problem.

My Steam starts around 2013 -- and even then, I didn't care about "Counterstrike" or "TF2". I had to use Steam, because games were on Steam. I never cared about the Valve crap games.

Steam has been growing to cater to a lot more people than just Counterstrike players.

I don't care about my level in CSGO or TF2, I care about the FUN from playing games.

It's quite interesting because we had inventory way before we had a marketplace or even trading, none of that was in the times of the green Steam UI. And Achievements have been there since almost day one.

I don't need most of nowadays Steam features either. But I'm not annoyed by them. I get rid of trading cards which give me few cents here and there. I don't craft badges, invest time in trading or the marketplace (beyond selling my cards which takes a few clicks) And I pimp my profile not much more than I did in all the former years.

You're not looking at the right games then. There's never been such plenty of games around to find your gaming niche.

OP i think your talking about the 2007-2008 era of steam when these steam features like community profiles, achievements and stats got implemented to the client. i do miss this era because it was fresh for steam to get these features implemented.

but personally i miss the early days when i started way back in 03/04. there was no achievements, no profiles, no store (only valve games sold) steam was a very clean ui. it just had a small box, with your gold and source games and a very buggy msn / icq friend list which would never work for me i remember using xfire and msn to chat back then.

I would like a stripped down utility client, call it a "steam lite". Minimize the background resource usage.

I do like the web browser, it makes pulling up my youtube playlist easy, and I don't have to worry about the gamebryo crash that ALT TAB causes.

I realize Steam doesn't want to pull a facebook and have separate apps for the social and the client.

And yes, I remember jolly green steam.

That lack of ad blocking and the inability to add extension to a chromium based browser is kind of ruining that for me. Have to do that on router level once I get a better one.

ull need a time machine for this. the only lite client build was in the years of 2003,2004,2005,2006. because there was never community hub, steam workshop, steam market, no profiles, no stats, no achievements nothing. it just had like i said earlier a mini square box, msn-ish chat system and valve games only which were purchasable in tiers from bronze, silver, gold.

even if someone made a skin it will never be like it was back in early days unless they permanently disable all these features i said which my guess would break steam.

And in all honestly i enjoyed steam much more in 2003-2006 than today because the valve games i played numerous hours were still fresh and i did love the old ui build (green-grey)

its a worthless feature, because on old steam, you didnt need and had any levels to access simple features. Those simple features were just there
The simple feastures are still there.

You seem to be bemoaning the fact that the inclusion of other features, whether you want them or not, somehow inhibits this.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but things are fluid. They change in time. Steam has seen continued rapid growth EVERY year, so they're clearly doing what the majority of people want.

You might want to consider that.

I've no particular fondness for social media aspects, but I welcome them simply because I know there's a lot of people who DO like them.

Simple empathy

Even the older 'lite' clients had their own share of problems. But time makes us see it all with rose-tinted glasses.

We wouldn't have memes like this for years otherwise:

When they first announced the level system and the friend cap per 10 levels I too thought it was terrible at the time. Then once I actually got into it and leveled up a bit it, it then dawned on me. I'll never add enough people for this ever to be an issue. I think the only people it would really effect are people who accept all random invites/put out random invites, or people who are just popular (Like streamers or youtubers) in which case people would give them cards to upgrade anyway.

I guess what I'm saying is that it's not that big of a deal, and the old versions of steam weren't that great for the company's growth.
