New Valve "Index" Standalone VR Headset coming up?! Will it become cheaper? ^^
So it seems there is a new Valve VR Headset coming in near future

https://youtu.be/sCM0JRUxmPE

You guys think it will become more expensive than the current Valve Index? Or you think it will be around the same price and the old one is getting cheaper?

Interesting. But it will most likely sell out on day 1 when it comes out.
I honestly don't like standalone ones. Specially if the only way to connect to your PC is via a single 100€ USB-C Cable like the Quest2

I'm afraid they more focus on the processing unit than on the actual quality and immersion potential.

I wanted to get a Index, but i've not seen a single review which did not had to get something replaced (some guy got his 5th replacement HMD, 2nd replacement lighthouse, 3rd controller replacement, 1 PSU replacement)

So i hope the new one will suffer less from this problems from fragile cables, controller drifting over to one screen just burning up while playing (in front of your eyes)

Also they should offer more replacement parts in their shop. What a shame if warranty is over, your PSU dies and you can't even BUY a new one from valve. Even their support can't help you in BUYING a new PSU when warranty is over. I won't know how many people use their broken index as paperweight now. Not worth 1k anymore imo. I wonder how nothing changed in their pricing over years. They prob. can't make it cheaper as they have to replace so many units

You don't need to send 100€ on a USB c cable for the quest 2, a 20€ will work just as good. Even better use Airlink instead and it needs no cables at all and it comes with the Quest 2.

Is this the solution via wifi? I guess i'd need a better router for that

Yes wifi. May not need a new router as long as it has 5ghz band.

Typically Quest 2 in the same room as the router, and having the quest 2 being the only device on the 5ghz band (unless you need your PC on wireless and can't use Ethernet then make sure PC is on 5ghz as well.), Is good enough for Airlink.
hmm thats maybe let me reconsider the quest2, thank you very much :)

What stops me from the Quest 2 is that it requires a Facebook account and they tie the activity into the Facebook account for tracking and marketing (at the least). I don't have a Facebook account, and don't want one, let alone forced to have one.

I don't see a stand alone version for the Index though, from what has been shown and discussed. Seems more to me that they are looking into wireless versions of the Index, like with the wireless adapter for the HTC Vive. Such a thing may require all that was mentioned in the patents and videos, as well as a power source for the system.

Oh i might misunderstood regarding the standalone part there. Yeh the facebook thing throws me off pretty hard, also the recent skin irritating issues somehow worries me.

With the Index, my only worries are that the new one will be released a few days/weeks after i ordered the "old" one, the fact they do not offer specific spare parts outside of warranty and the many replacements. I've seen so many review videos and asked some people in our community, they all had at least 1 HMD replacement up to 5. I don't know if it's due to power-using it, or due to bad quality. But the latter should not be the case for this pricing :/

Every product is going to have it's issues. Even Teslas and many other high priced items.

Price can't guarantee quality in any product.

Industries actually have levels of failure that they consider acceptable. If the product exceeds that, then a company will often look back at the design and manufacturing process.

With out knowing how many have sold to compare to how many have failed, we can't say that it isn't with in acceptable levels.

As for waiting, that is up to you. You can buy a known product now or wait for an unknown one.

It could work out or it could not. No one really knows until it happens.

Same with video cards. You could skip X generation, but there is no guarantee that Y won't have issues and X may no longer be available by then.

There really are too many factors, so it is best to just decide what you feel is better for you.

"The best time to buy is always now" i've heard, i think this applies here as well ^^ I think i'm gonna go with the index anyway, as i don't pay for a standalone processing unit i don't even need. I hope the cables are not that annoying without pulley system, as i won't mount pulleys in my whole room :D

Do you know if you get steam XP and steam points when purchasing hardware?

this is why i always sweat a little when i use propane. i know that millions are produced and there is a failure rate. even if it is one in a billion, that one just might be in my hand :)

No idea about points as I have never purchased hardware through Steam, at least not since the point system was added

Purchases never got you XP, except when it increases your game count. As it comes with Half-Life: Alyx, you should get the XP for the game being added, but that is about it.

That is why I stick to charcoal. I don't trust propane, though my biggest worry is running out in the middle of a BBQ with propane.
