"Steam Account Credentials have Changed"
The 16th of this month (if my memory doesn't fail me) around 1:00am after I turned back on my PC from "Sleep" mode; I got a message from the Steam client saying that my credentials were changed. That was the 2nd time that happened to me (can't remember the day when this happened for the first time but it was last week). The thing is, none of my credentials were changed! (also the 1st time that happened to me nothing was changed). My e-mail was the same, my password too, my inventory is OK, no purchases were made, no games were recently played, nothing! I checked if I had any APIs but as expected, nothing at all! I don't use VPNs, I've analyzed my PC to see if there were any viruses but nothing, I also checked my LogIn History and all of the log-ins were made by me (also as I expected). I only have Steam opened on my PC and my cellphone, I also have Steam Guard activated since I created my account (in case someone asks). I've never changed phones or my cellphone number. I also checked my e-mail and no changes were made. Is there any chance that something has happened to my account? Or could it be an internet problem/Steam problem? (that could be possible too, right?).

Did anyone else recently had this problem too? I mean, it's not of a big deal, I just have to log in back to Steam but it can get annoying tho...

EDIT: More info added and some corrections made.

Those of you saying we shouldn't use sleep are just making excuses for a poorly designed authentication system.

(I should point out that GOG and the EPIC GAMES store don't have any problems with sleep mode. Even ORIGIN handles it just fine.)

The sleep function has been built into every computer made in the last 30 years or so. It is a standard function every laptop user uses all the time. Saying we shouldn't be using it is akin to saying we shouldn't be using CAPS_LOCK. If you are just going to be a TROLL then we are not interested in your opinion. Go bother somebody else.

For my part, I went ahead and opened a support request for this issue. As you probably guessed it was a waste of time. What he said in essence is that they know it's broken but it doesn't affect enough people for them to bother fixing it.

Below is the final reply I got when they closed the issue:

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue. I am sorry, but I do not have a fix for you at this time.

Along with reports submitted directly to Support, the Steam team uses a number of community sources to help investigate the frequency and severity of issues like this. These issues are continually being addressed through Steam Updates. Support does not provide any information on upcoming or planned fixes.

Again, I am sorry that we do not have a fix for you at this time.

Steam Support
Charles

Those of us saying not to use sleep, gave reasons for why it shouldn't be used and I myself even said that it does have its uses.

To not repeat myself, cause you can just go back and read, I'll say the main point.

Sleep, causes an issue with steam.

Steam, as shown in your quote with steam support, does not have a fix nor will they provide information.

Thus the answer: Don't want the issue? Don't use the sleep function while operating steam until the issue is resolved.

Assuming that it is sleep mode that is triggering it in the first place. i am having hard time to see why it would change such things in other programs.
That's because I never said that.

I suggest you read again what I originally wrote, especially how I started my post.
Yea i re read it and my apology to sound like a jerk. But it dosent leave any room other then sleep mode being a thing, and since other seems to have same problem i am showing my self out. Maybe do a virus check or reinstall windows?

Thank you for being honest - that's nicely refreshing as so many double down or get bent out of shape.

The sad reality is though that Steam was never designed to be half of what it is todaqy. It was only ever designed to be a vehicle to distribute Valve's own handful of games they expected to turn out.

So, I give them some leeway on that part.

However, I'm rather on the fence about sleep mode on the whole. Sure, many, many Windows native programs run and can accommodate sleep mode no problem, but that DOES NOT mean that all can, purely by nature of what they are and how they operate.

For example, I have certain audio engineering applications that also don't like Sleep mode and there really is no way round it.

Now, it COULD mean that Valve have done a silly and coded this badly, or it simply could mean there isn't an easy way round it. Until anyone gets to really root through their code, we can't say.

Well then, your account is compromised, so make sure to follow all the steps detailed above and DO NOT miss any steps.

if you use a vpn or hardware spoofer or port fowarding or lan fowarding it'll give you this message sometimes once you disconnect/reconnect to the service/sever

There is no evidence at all that accounts are compromised. The fact that people reporting this issue can login with the same credentials show that the credentials have not changed. If people are using steam guard then changing the credentials would require steam guard to be compromised as well.

I am sure your post is well meaning but telling people that their accounts are compromised when they are not leads to confusion and panic.

This does not appear to be a problem with the security of steam accounts. It is a problem with access being terminated when a computer wakes from sleep which never used to be a problem and is a completely normal part of operating a computer that moves from place to place.

FYI you can go to Recent Login History in https://help.steampowered.com/en/accountdata/ to see your own recent login history. This can help you check whether someone has gained unauthorized access to your account.

Well, here's the thing. Look back at when I posted that. It was not clear from their presented data at that point.

And in fact, most of the time, it IS the case. It just wasn't once they'd later offered further info.

I was most certainly barking up the wrong tree, but that's only because of a lack of info at the time.

I just turned my VPN on and got the same message from Steam straight after doing so saying my credentials have changed & asking me to login again. I'm on a Win 10 PC using a hardline rather than Wifi. I also use Norton 360 for security which is who's VPN I use.

So this probably means the issue is that you're changing your IP address while on the same computer.

That's WHY you need to log in again - that's precisely the point.

If you use a VPN (aand remember, DO NOT use a VPN to circumvent regional store restrictions here as it's against the rules you agreed to - you're fine for other use though) then that WILL change you IP address, meaning Steam sees that as a new computer and you have to log in again. That's how it's meant to work.

I suspected the VPN too since steam community is blocked in China. But today I turned off all VPNs and still got logged out in a few hours. The account cannot be possibly compromised since I have steam guard in a mobile phone with no internet connection and my login history showed all the login attempts were made by myself and in my city.

I now think it may be a bug related to either built in steam browser or somewhere else in steam app.

Started happening to me on a new MacBook Air, so it may be an issue when two computers on the same network are logged into the same Steam account, because I do have a PC laptop as well. Seems like a message warning that shouldn't happen though.

Poor design. No login has changed (at least for my issue).

Hopefully they fix this because it is really annoying having to type in my password again...and do the stupid email verification (which I know is there to protect my account...but I shouldn't have to do it). Having worked in IT, password managers were helpful, but I hate having to use passwords. I do it...but at home with a computer that already requires a login...I don't like having to re-log into Steam every time. There's a check box so I don't have to...
