And regarding the actual topic at hand, as I said, hasn't Gabe mentioned that they're working on some games? Other than that interview, I haven't seen much come by about what they're working on, but I'd be curious about that.
I can only hope one of them is portal 3 but I doubt it. :/
Why must it 'suck' I mean would you rather have a crappy sequel that retroactively taints the previous game? It was a fun story. It had a fun mechanic. BOth have been played out. Wait until they figure out a new interesting mechanic to base an FPS puzzle game around, but FPS puzzle games are in of themselves a tricky genre. The portals have closed. Portal 2 upped the ante with refined mechanics and multiplayer. What do you expect them to do? Battle-Royale? Survival-Crafting?
Now if they imagined some new mechanic to base a puzzle game around...that'd be different and more likely. Gravity, Possession,Lemmings, Tower Defense, all possible, but they're not going to be 'Portal'. Portal is done.. Rather than run it into the ground,, better to create something new, that allows for new ideas and tech to be xplored. That's basically what interests VAlve in a sense.
Why do you think Artifact was a CCG? Because it was something Valve had never tried before. It was a challenge. HL: Alyx. Valves Foray into VR.
Valve is still making games. They just don't generally like making games they've already made. Sadly, for some people those are the only games they count.
I think any fan of anything wants it to continue, I mean that is why and how bad sequels happen
That does not mean they want to have one just to have one, or that if we do get one it will suck
But yes, it does suck that there is no continue to something great, if I got Ice-Cream I want more when it's done, I may get sick of it, it may not be as good, but I do want that experience to continue regardless because its a good feeling
That is the idea
Yes it sucks not to have more Portal, more Valve games faster, its better overall, if they cant, make it as good as one can hope, that does not mean we can't hope or get discontent that our world is not a utopia where each sequel gives you the same experience (the same as if Half-Life was a Wow moment Half-life 2 was a Wow moment no that its the same Shoot shoot kill movie action movie shoot experience)
Its not that we expect Valve to take out Portal 3 tomorrow, or in 4000000 Valve years, its just that it be amazing if they do (A Portal game, not a game carrying portal name, but a game holding the greatness, and fun of it)
So overall mate, your making giving someone here a voice they have not voiced and creating an argument where it is honestly not needed or wanted
As long as no one holds Gabe by gunpoint to make the game, I think we can keep dreaming without harming
I play "Portal Stories: Mel" its really nice, and really invested, but over all it dose not give completely the "Portal" feeling as Half Life Alyx give for Half Life fans, maybe not all but some at the very least
In the first case I wonder...I mean do you want portal 3 for more portal puzzle content, the work shop and mod community already have that covered. So the question becomes, why do you need a sequel for something that's basically just a level pack? As for taht it doesn't have to suck...well lets put it this way. good experience leaves you shourting 'Encore', a bland experience leaves you saying, 'That's enough'. A bad experience "No more".
WOuld you rather a series stop when you're screaming encore, or when you're saying "That;'s enough".
And that's how you get a surfeit of something. Double edged sword. And even if you say that its the ganmer's choice, these same gamers will still blame the developer for watering down, running into the ground, making souless copy pastes. Because we see this with game series where the developers feel obligated to crank out a new insrtallment ever 1-3 years.
COD, Fifa, BF, WoW, etc, etc.
Was the WoW moment of HL the combat, the story telling, or the sneaky way they hid loading screens creating sense of un interrupted progression?
And would people really be happy with that? Valve did HL:Alyx,, people still be camouring for HL3, and EP3.
Because portal was never really a series about story. It was about a mechanic. That's what started portal. A neat take on FPS problem solving.
When they figure oput a new FPS problem solving mechanic that hasn't been done to death, we'll see a new game and perhaps new franchaise.
Poprtal is done. Lets just hope Valve doesn't drag their feet on "Cloak"
I'd say sensible fans can see it might not be best for something to continue. Hardcore fans Will always just want another dose.
Those that will understand your decisions, or those who see you as just a tool for their next fix?
Which sort of audience leads to an overall healthier franchaise?
I think we've already seen the missteps that can happen when the audience is so eager for those hits that they will literally buy any and everything with a given logo on it.
There's a middle ground of course but its a darned small patch of ground to stick a landing on.
Now you're just fishing for self-justification...
I'm what you call a "middle of the road" kind of gal, I'm aware that another sequel may not be the best thing for the franchise but on the flipside of the same coin, I really want to see the story continue.
I suppose it would boil down to what a "portal 3" would be about and far be it from me to decide what direction it should or would go in but I'd imagine that the story involving chell would most likely be at an end since she left the aperture science facility.
Regardless, all I can do is continue to sit and hope that we just might get more portal down the line.
First of all "real fans" dude, no one should be going into that hole, because when you decide how that is defined you also need to start defining so much stuff that honestly it becomes a black hole if disagreement
Is Half-Life: Alyx a Half-Life game? or is it something else?
At least from what I can recall Half-Life name somewhat refers to the protagonist most of the games (so far) that is not living a full life, but only half of one
So is a game without the dr not a Half-Life game? or can it still be a Half-Life game?
can a portal game without portals still be a Portal game? I think yes
Because Portal even if the name it got is not there, the game can have more parts
Portal is a puzzle game, that works with physics and so on, that was done really well, it has characters and history that can be explored and areas that are yet to be seen
And you really think that Portal, as is, was done to death and there is nothing that can't be improved or renew in it?
You got amazing mod makers and so on, but there is a reason people love Portal game that comes from Valve more than what people even talk about Narbacular Drop
And here is the kicker (Stolen that from you
I am not sitting here red face holding my breath for Portal 3 to come out, I honestly don't think Portal 3 is likely to even come in my lifetime
That does not mean I don't want it, it does not mean I am not somewhat sad that it's not coming
But hey, I can do both
And in the end mate, you don't need to always be the negative side of things, I know we are in a disagreement on this from our past posts, but some times just being negative and trying to go against for the sake of going against is not helpful or good for anyone
Again no one on this topic is trying to hold a gun to anyone in Valve (or holding them in their house in a wheelchair) to make them make it, some just speak their hope, even if they don't think it will happen, and just hope it may
Yes games coming out for the sake of just filling the need of the user is bad, but lets put it down here, Valve is not going to take out a Portal 3, just because users want it, if they would we would have seen Half-Life 3 already (and it will have been likely bad)
Again when asking for Portal 3, users are not asking for Portal 3 we are asking for its experience it's feeling its spirit to continue
TL:DR: when asking for the next game people are asking for the experience that was great about it, a sum of a hole, that makes Portal, Portal, its not the story, it's not the mechanics alone, its the entire thing, and when you have something good, you can always hope you can have more of it not of a sick it
Anyway, at this point mate, I don't think there are any more words I can use that will transfer the idea if you did not understand it, or that will move this discussion beyond, so I will stop here and will return to comment on the topic itself for more progressive movement of this discussion before this becomes an endless cycle
((I am saying the overall discussion should not be locked, because this miniature discussion inside has gotten to an end.. just to be clear, there can be more to discuss here outside of it)
If at all I think that Portal 3 can be more about before Chell story, and before Glados, there were more then just the Portal gun going on in Apacher, and there is a lot more stuff they can play around with as an idea that can be before Portals come to be, that will allow more interesting stuff, and to maybe explore the more interesting characters in Portal games (the guys that write the posters around, and homeless that passed there)
Outside of Apacher I think making a "Portal" like puzzle game can be harder to do in a proper way

A little of track i know. But it is likely the closest you gonna get to a new Portal game. Unless it goes VR.
The name Half-Life was a relatively arbitary choice.
So the question of what makes a Half-Life game does become tricky. A game set in the same mythos and world would be the best consideration. Which honestly opens up the field for creatuive endavour. At the same time though it dilutes the image of a brand. So needs be one should keep a relatively tight focus on core mechanical, thematic, and/or narrative elements.
Well here's the thing. What would be the point of gcalling it Portal then? Would you be happy if you bought a game named Portal: Seciond Shift fired it up and found it to be ...a hitman style stealth game with bugger all to do with problem solving via Portals?
Done to death? But played out. Can you think of any improveement beyond, bigger maps?
I am filing the DMCA as I type this.
Fair enough. Fair enough. Its more my issue with the meme at this point. This ghas become the gaming equivalent of the 'Rick-Roll' or the second coming of 'AYBABTU'.
The question of 'Will Valve start Making games' implies that they ever stopped. We know Valve generally avoids announcing game stuff unless they are already pretty far along in development.. You won't hear about a game from them until a Year out from release.
Its one thing t love CHocolate ice cream, its another when one overlooks the existence of the other 99 flavours because its out of supply.
No I take it back. Portal needs to have a VR conversion. I wanna see Twitch Streamers doing no Dramamine runs
Games with movement is not that much of an issue
I think the issue with portal will be more to see everything while you are moving around and so on to make it clear, Portal has all kind of ways to make you "look" at the right place, will be harder in a VR game possibely
But in the end VR just started, but honstly Portal over all should be pretty easy to port after you pass by the sickness issue, and some games showed its possible all ready (place the user inside a robot.. and maybe you all ready mostly done)
