So as a Canadian i have to pay tax now?
Bought a game 5 days ago and didn't have to pay tax, now that the problem with adding games to the cart seems to be fixed (for me anyway), its trying to charge me tax?

NM... just did a google search and ya, f me, a new law came in to effect today in Canada that steam and other online services have to charge us tax. So now i get to add 13% to all the steam prices.. f'n fantastic.

Steam isn't the one that is taxing you.

Steam is neither a media outlet nor an education centre.
STEAM --- should sell games to canadians 13% less to offset this BS tax that starts for digital goods in canada as of July 2021. (Remember people its an election year ..... )

1. That's not how things work.

2. Game devs/pubs set the prices on their games.

3. Regardless who is in office, the digital sales tax would have eventually made it through.

What does an election year have to do with Steam? Is Lord Gaben running for office?

The problem is that would that be a huge legal issue unless they removed tax cost for everyone else and it's not how taxes work as the person selling the items does not cover the cost like that for normal businesses.

It would be complicated, but they could effectively do a "save the tax" sale. You're still paying the tax, (because legally you have to in most jurisdictions), but they offset it with said discount. It would eat into their own profits if Valve were to set it up, but it's possible. Even if highly unlikely.

Why should Steam be made to subsidize your tax obligation? And you're right. Go out and vote for those that represent your political values.

Canada's has actually fluctuated several times. Repealed completely, no, but in headier economic times both provinces and the federal government have cut their taxes. Granted, the GST was only supposed to be "temporary" back when it was passed (in the '80s, I think), but it was reduced from 7% to 5% eventually. I mean, combined GST/PST in Ontario used to be 15%. The current HST is only 13%. That's 2 whole percentage points we're "saving" now.

There's nothing like defending unambiguously corrupt politicians to draw the ire of the common people, is there?

Well this is a shock, people complaining about how ♥♥♥♥ their govt is because they have to pay tax on the games they play in their homes on expensive technology that runs on electricity etc, etc, etc. GOI . To the Canadian bloke whinging about the tax on comp games, yeah mate ya got to pay to play, it doesn't matter what the 'game' someone shells out cash and someone else scrapes it in. Just thought you might like to know how rough it's been out here in the rest of the world you lucky bugger.:steamfacepalm:
