Purchase history screenshot scam - Still ongoing
Hi all,

I just got contacted by a steam user named "Caleb", long story short, he told me to contact an "admin" in order to cancel a wrong report for fraudulent transaction he had put on me.

The "admin" was probably impersonating an existing steam user, @jmccaskey on discord, claiming to be said admin and requesting a screenshot of my purchase history to remove the report and prevent my account from being blocked.

Yeah well I googled the request because it seemed really fishy (a Steam admin would just go check himself) and of course it was a scam. So I sent them packing, reported the Discord profile but the Steam user unfriended me before I could report him. And there are 50.000 Calebs... so yeah.

Anyway, be vigilant. And jmccaskey: be aware your name is being used for fraud attempts...

He already knows, for quite a while. Not much he can do about it.

Oh man... Sorry to hear that. I feel for him.

A lot of the Valve staff are being used in such a way.

As soon as everyone realizes that Steam does not utilize Discord for any account issues, the scam will continue. So, basically forever.

Keep reporting those accounts on Discord when you have the opportunity. It's a Discord problem more than it is a Steam issue.

I hope that is not your real account name and email in that picture.
would it work if steam issued periodic emails from time to time listing scams to avoid..

I'm sure i would pay attention to atleast one important email from steam..

You know what I find funny about these scammers, It's just that they never sound professional. Somehow they are lazy even in their .... scamming business. There is no effort to make things sound valid and you can see that here too.

They don't even end their lines with dots, forget commas, etc. see the screenshot.

I really hope no one fell for this. (yes I get someone did, but other then them)

Edit:
I mean even the first custom line sounds... just dumb.
4hours (missing a space)
capital after a comma
Illegal with a capital
How..
even the first two words "We acknowledge" sounds ... robotic.

If they ran it through a spell checker even once and autocorrected it, then it would have been more convincing, but oddly they didn't even do this one simple thing.

Edit 2: considering too that there is an AI (deep learning) tool out there that can convert casual tone into formal and vise versa.

The page contains the actual account name not just the usually seen display name so at the very least it gives them info to make the next attempt look more legitimate by using that.

Pretty much every aspect about that should raise concern...

Lot of grammar issues,
Steam would never tell someone to directly contact the user they reported,
Steam support would never share someone else's ticket with you,
Steam support would never share someone else's account details,
Steam support does not use other platforms for communication (like Discord),
They would not need you to directly contact another Valve employee,
Steam would never take action from a report with no proof - a "mistaken" report means nothing

and a bunch of other things... any one of those should make you suspicious of it
